A/ when (approximately) did you see the problem for the first time ? Are you able to correlate it to a special event, like a Firefox update, installing a particular tool or addon on your system, ... ?

It first occured at, for me, around the start of July 2015. The exact date, is unknown to me, but it was after the recent FireFox update (39.0). Adobe Flash has since asked me to update. I did this the other day, but it is asking me to do it yet again. Which very odd.

B/ what version of Firefox are you running ?

39.0

C/ what version of Video DownloadHelper are you running ?

5.3.1.1-signed

D/ does installing the latest development version http://www.downloadhelper.net/install-beta.php?version=5.4.0a5 solves the problem ?

Nope. Literally just tested it with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmrCoGj9m2Y
I still got the same two results (screen capture attached)

E/ if you disable temporarily the other add-ons (particularly the YouTube-related ones), are you still missing the YouTube variants ?

Yes

F/ can you make sure the settings "Auto-Detect" in "Gallery capture" and "Applet auto-detection" in "Screen capture" are on (a user reported this fixed her problem) ?

They are already enabled. Disabling and then re-enabling them did nothing to help. But it may need to be noted that my Blacklist is now empty without my doing.

G/ does using a previous version of VDH like 5.2.0 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/versions/?page=1#version-5.2.0.1-signed changes anything ?

Not a bit.

Here's a video of me trying older versions and then the latest version with zero success.

You definitely need to give a try with version 5.4.0 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/versions/

I have DLH 5.4.0 and it is no longer working. When I try to download almost any clip from Youtube there is a symbol of a tiny lock in the download menu of VDH next to the clips name, and when the lock it there is prevents me from getting those clips. Also, as of today 17.7.15 I can no longer download any Vimeo clips at all using this download helper.
What is happening? it used to work so well. Please help.

The lock symbol has been introduced in version 5.3 to indicate that the youtube video is protected and unlikely to be downloadable (in a very few cases, we noticed the video could still be downloaded). You may want to pick an entry without that lock sign.

Giving a try to https://vimeo.com/channels/staffpicks/133515565 i had no special problems downloading.

It looks like youtube has changed something within the last day or two, and the only variants that VDH is able to find are the ADP variants that are actually being played in the youtube player. When the resolution of the video being played is changed (either manually or automatically) VDH will then 'find' the new variant being played.

Same results with all versions of VDH that I tried: 5.3.1, 5.4.0rc2 & 5.5.0a4.

A: Started August 7th, around maybe 8pm EST roughly. Worked earlier in the day with the same instance of Firefox, having not closed it in the interim between when it did work and when it stopped working.

B: 39.0.3

C: 5.3.1.1-signed.

D: No.

E: Tried, no change.

F: Auto-detection and applet detection both on.

G: No other version works, including 5.2.0.1 or 5.4.0.

Additional: I think it may explicitly be an issue with Youtube as I can still download from other sources. I have noticed they've changed the player over the past couple of days so it seems possible they've somehow messed up the "hook" or whatever that VDH uses.

Today I just noticed that VDH stopped working for me too.  I think the  problem started occurring about Aug 6 for me.  I can reproduce it with VDH 5.3.1.1 or 5.4.0 in a clean FF profile.

In addition one thing I noticed prior to the failure was that the flash plugin's contextual menu that allows you to "Copy video URL" (among other things) is no longer working too (and that contextual appears in all browsers and is not FF specific).    I thought this was my only problem until I saw this thread here about VDH failing to detect all variants. Maybe that's a clue.  Maybe not.  But I thought I would mention it.

The fact that both these failures (both involving videos) occurring at about the same time makes me suspicious.

Could you give a try using version 5.5.0a4 as of https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/video-downloadhelper-5/9GqxBGEN-lU ?

I like the changes made to help identify ADP variants. Still not sure why I cant totally hide them but at least I wont click on one by accident anymore.

have tried the latest beta update a5, haven't seen a non ADP file for download in over a week.  Using a mac, firefox 39.0.3,

Have toyed with using the converter, but every step I do, asks me to add another bit of software to do the last step.  really trying to not screw up my macbook.

Experienced strange changes recently (haven't downloaded anything from Youtube in a while).

Using the latest version of Firefox and DH 5.4.1, normal and ADP video links showed up as usual. When I tried to download them, however, they would display in the downloads menu as 0 KB files, and DownloadHelper would report it as an error saying "these video files might be protected."

So I tried installing the most recent development version, and now only ADP links appear as others have reported. DownloadHelper works fine on other websites.

Thank you for trying to fix this issue. DH is very convenient and I appreciate your time.

VDH 5.5.0aX is under development and the whole download module has been rewritten (but not tested enough yet). A couple of other users reported that some downloads were not finishing. This is a problem we need to reproduce and fix.

If you need to use VDH and you're having that problem, i suggest using 5.4.1 from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/
