Hello, when watching youtube live streams (without activly saving anything/using downloadhelper) the RAM usage of my PC is rising without end. The Video and the PC start jiggling. Only solution yet: disabling the addon.

That's quite dangerous, because such bugs can lead to buffer overflow.

Firefox 88.0 (64-bit), Ubuntu 20.04

Thanks for reporting. This issue (memory leak while watching live stream) is being reported from time to time but we haven't been able to reproduce it. The fact it affects Youtube live streams was never reported, this can help us. Could you share a specific URL of a Youtube live stream where you noticed the issue ?

At this special live stream it seems to be reproducable to me. It happened multiple times at this stream. But only if I watch it live. The (unlisted) after-video of the stream is running without a problem. I just looked for other random live streams, these which I just tried do not produce any memory usage rise.

So if you want to check it out, you need to visit the channel at the right time:
The live stream is on every Thursday at around 19.00 - 21.00 ECT (17.00 - 19.00 UCT)

I have the same problem, could it have something to do with Youtube Ultra Low Latency?

Just watched it again. It also leads to 100% usage of one CPU thread. With downloadhelper disabled it needs much less CPU.

It won't be easy to fix an issue we only see 2 hours a week :)
Any chance you are also seeing that problem (RAM and/or CPU) on one of those live streams: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4R8DWoMoI7CAwX8_LjQHig ?

My current assumption: ( ! )
The reason could be an unstable connection of the streamer. The musician of my first link as well as the the gaming streamer below are both "amateur" streamers and their streams have loading delays from time to time. This could somehow trigger the leak.
Professional streams from TV News, Nasa etc dont have such delays and don't trigger that problem to me.

At this "Among Us" live stream some CPU rise happened. (no idea how often/how long this stream is online)

On some other of your link's streams I tried it did not happen.

Other assumptions:
For example watching some additional youtube video. A normal one that does not need to be live. And then switching between those different youtube tabs within firefox here and there.
The reason could be found in video resolution options. I sometimes set video quality from auto to a manual value.
But generally this does not seem to be an issue.

I think the more plausible reason you should consider with live YouTube streams is if you click the vdh button while a stream is playing,
you'll see that it is constantly generating new entries in the list. Watch that scroll bar to the right get smaller and smaller.

Depending on the live stream those chat boxes to the right can also be problematic , I've seen rises in cpu or ram when there is lot's of activity
in the chat. Hiding the chat remedies that.

Why not open these live streams in a private window where vdh is not running. That's the solution to the problem.

Thanks for confirming you don't see the problem with YouTube live section videos.

Higher CPU usage is normal when playing HLS videos as VDH has to analyse the media stream on the fly, though on a normal computer, it is not supposed to be problematic.
Also, "amateur" or "pro" generated streams should not make a difference: VDH is not supposed to leak memory. But of course if we have a bug here, the way the stream is built may affect how VDH react to it.

What we are looking for here is 24/7 live streams where we can reproduce the issue,  so we can fix it.

If the number of entries in the menu raises, the memory usage also increases, this is very normal. However, the maximum number of entries for a given tab is limited (when reaching the maximum, older entries are deleted), so this should not considered to be a memory leak.

This bug is still persist on version 7.6.0 for Firefox Linux.

The problem being it detect every chunk of the video and audio and I can't find the setting of the maximum number so there are several thousands entries and the Firefox just freeze within minutes.

This happen to every Youtube live stream.

You'll want to keep this as a handy reference:

https://groups.google.com/g/video-downloadhelper-q-and-a/c/BzPLK2YyL-s

Specifically, there is a reference in there for opening the VDH Settings. On the
Behavior tab, scroll down until you find the setting named Max variants. You can change
that value to something more convenient for your situation. Be sure you click the Save
button in the bottom right corner of the Settings dialog.

My Max variants is always 6 but the number can be more than 1000, and it did but as only the last 3 digits are readable so I don't know for sure how many.

BTW @Wild Willy did the previous messages go as emails? I use "Reply to author" but it doesn't show here.

Interestingly I also tried set the "Minimum size" but it didn't do anything either.

I did receive E-mails from you but that is not what you should do. The Reply to author
button sends an E-mail to just the person whose post you are replying to. Only that
person gets to read what you have to say. This defeats the purpose of this forum. You
need to pretty much forget about the Reply to author button & always use the Reply all
button. The Reply all button places your comments here in the discussion thread where
everybody can read what you have to say. I have said many times I do not work for VDH.
I am just another user, like you & everybody else here. I will not respond via E-mail
when the discussion should be continuing here. You want your comments to appear here as
posts so the maximum number of fellow users as well as Jerome & sometimes even Michel can
read them. I don't have all the answers. Case in point: I don't have anything more to
say to help solve the problem you have raised in this discussion. But the totality of
everybody participating here may as a collective have more of the answers than I do
alone. So don't be using the Reply to author button. Always use the Reply all button.

The Reply to author button is for communicating purchase information in private to Jerome
when he asks for it. There may be unusual other circumstance that warrant using Reply to
author but they are just that, unusual, rare. You should pretty much forget about the
Reply to author button. Use the Reply all button.
