Hi,

On 28 Jan, user Ivan asked how to disable Smart Naming in DownloadHelper 7.1.2. I didn't quite understand the answer, but it seemed like a solution was on its way.
Now, in version 7.2.2, Smart Naming seems to be implemented – but I still can't switch the feature off. As with Ivan, I prefer to keep the original file names, which should be readily available. But no matter how I configure Smart Naming rules, I never get the original file names.

Normally, I use Firefox when browsing. But when I need to use DownloadHelper, I switch to Chrome, because there I can still switch Smart Naming off. And I clearly and easily get the original file names.

Don't get me wrong – I really think DownloadHelper is a great tool. But it would be nice to get the simple, basic, down-to-earth stuff working, before introducing all the fancy features.

If there is a setting I've missed, or if there is a work-around (other than switching to Chrome), please let me know.

There is no such thing as an "original file name" that would work every time. In rare situations, the server provides a file name in the HTTP headers, sometimes the last part of the video URL can be used as a meaningful file name (but very often it is a set of digits and characters unrelated to the video name). The page name can often be used as file name, and sometimes the name is better when extracted from content in the page.

For those reasons, we implemented the smart naming feature that can pick a naming method of your choice based on the domain you are downloading from.

There might be bugs and possible improvements here, but if the current system does not suit your need, you should provide an example (the URL of a page containing a video) so we see what can be done there.

I've had issues with Smart naming before with the older 6.3+ version.  I was using titles that had explicit episode numbers in bedded in the title. It probably is similar in 7+ but as Mig stated, getting file names that work every time, is hard.  Different sites store their files with different titles/names and they are not consistent, even for the same file.

I tried looking at the 7.2.2 smart name dialog.  It is hard to figure out.  Other than the drop down selections, the other boxes....well I don't know what to enter.  Maybe Mig could provide a short primer on the entries or a link to a previous discussion.

For me, the files names only provided an close indicator of the actual file.  I have always used the Save content to a file/folder and changed the actual SaveAs name to my choosing.  This method also allowed a folder choice.  If you were using the Quickdownload or just a Save of the found name, then that could be problematic for you.  Recently, there has been an issues that the CoApp SaveAs Tab or Window pop-up was closing after 10sec, however, Mig's fixed this issue in 7.2.3a1...the two displays now stay open for at least 1min before closing.

Not sure why you're saying that what was being asked for can't be done, since it was the default action in previous versions of the program.

For a specific example: Say I want to download a video from Tumblr: http://habitualshaker.tumblr.com/post/157728747606/professorpineapple-umbr3

In previous versions of the app, this would download as tumblr_okyywkIL6Q1vnq1cr.mp4 which is what I'm looking for. But in this version, it wants to name it "He was destroyed!", which is the name displayed on the page (and would be displayed on any post by that Tumblr user, meaning any video I downloaded from that user would have the same name).

When I click on the "Details" in the DownloadHelper for the video, it shows me
url: https://vtt.tumblr.com/tumblr_okyywkIL6Q1vnq1cr.mp4
urlFilename: tumblr_okyywkIL6Q1vnq1cr

I understand that maybe this information isn't available for every single website, but I don't understand why there isn't an option to default to that when it is. (Or if there is an option I can't figure out how to set it up.)

Smart Naming Feature - How To Disable in the latest versions...?

This Smart Naming feature - although a useful feature for many, I find it rather cumbersome.
When I'm downloading videos, I like the original file name provided by the website itself.
Many are in a sequential order such as a Subject with multiple videos.

An example would be:

   12345_00_01 How to do this.mp4
   12345_00_02 How to do that.mp4
12345_01_01 How to do that again.mp4
12345_01_02 How to do that better.mp4

When using the VDH icon from Firefox, it wants to download the video file as "How to do this.mp4" for example.
If I right-click on the video and choose Save video as... I'll get the original filename 12345_00_01 How to do this.mp4

The original filename used to be the default in older versions, but over the last few years this Smart Naming seems to be the default behavior which is rather annoying and forces me to use a different downloader in order to have this benefit.
So the question here isn't about how to use the Smart Naming Feature - It's How do you disable it?

Can you give a try to beta version 7.3.2a7 from https://www.downloadhelper.net/firefox/betas ?

You should be able to define a smartnaming rule for the domain(s) you want in mode "Get name from header/URL".

Hi, I was finally able to get it to work for individual domains by adding rules for them one-by-one (in version 7.3.5). But how do I get this to be the default behavior for all websites? I've tried entering rules for *.com, *.org, *.net, but this doesn't do anything.

Again, not to belabor a point, but this is functionality that was not only very simple but actually the default in earlier versions of the program, and I don't understand why it's like pulling teeth trying to get it to work now.

Hi, is there a response to this? How do I set this as the default for all websites?

No, there is no default for having this setting as in most cases, the name for the video would be too cryptic.
