Am trying to download and install

Video DownloadHelper Companion App 1.1.3

This appears to be the correct download for my system Linux Mint 5.2.1.3 Mate and it successfully down loads.

Linux - 32 bits - targz

Other linux distributions

I don't understand how to do the extra step. This shows up - command line entries.

targz user-wide install

# tar xf net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.1.3-1_i386.tar.gz -C ~ # ~/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.1.3/bin/net.downloadhelper.coapp-linux-32 install --user

targz system-wide install

# sudo tar xf net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.1.3-1_i386.tar.gz -C /usr/local # sudo /usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.1.3/bin/net.downloadhelper.coapp-linux-32 install

If I copy and paste them into a command line nothing happens. I am not very familiar with the use of the command line, so this is probably my problem. Or the command line doesn't know how to access the download

Do you think it would be easier for me to just uninstall DLH and reinstall the latest version?

Untaring the targz package is not enough for the coapp to work. You have to execute the app once with parameters "install --user" or "install --system" in order to setup some files that are required by Firefox (and Chrome/Chromium) to run the coapp.
If you didn't get an error message executing it, you are probably good. Just check the VDH settings to see if the coapp is recognized.

I must be using the command line incorrectly. I use it so rarely. I pasted the commands exactly as shown above, pushed enter and nothing happens. Do I need to post the commands differently? Like one line at a time? I have Firefox60.0.1

Any chance you included the leading "#" ? If so, this make the following characters to be treated as comment.

Both commands should be starting with sudo

Yes, the # was included. Don't have much time to play with things, so I will try to get this figured out this weekend. Thank you.

Since the update I assume I need the coapp 1.2.1. I downloaded it. Does it need to be somewhere else for the command prompt to find it ? The archive went to my Downloads file. "net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.1-1_i386.tar.gz"

This is what I get when I try to perform the extra step:

roger@roger-TravelMate-P245-M ~ $ tar xf net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.1-1_i386.tar.gz -C ~
tar: net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.1-1_i386.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Just so you know, this is VDH info for my laptop:

When you download the file net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.1-1_i386.tar.gz from https://github.com/mi-g/vdhcoapp/releases/tag/v1.2.1 , this file goes somewhere in your disk, by default in ~/Downloads. Then the extra step is to be adapted:

tar xf ~/Downloads/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.1-1_i386.tar.gz -C ~

or

cd ~/Downloads; tar xf net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.1-1_i386.tar.gz -C ~

That worked - after I removed the extra space you put in the file name. Which I see you corrected for this board as compared to the email I received.

Thank you.
