Nothing but error messages - the terminal cannot find the file I downloaded.

The instructions say that I must download the file, which I did, and then run these two commands in the terminal"

# sudo tar xf net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.3-1_i386.tar.gz -C /usr/local
# sudo /usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.3/bin/net.downloadhelper.coapp-linux-32 install --system

Now, I got the file name error corrected - the file is numbered 1.2.2-2, not 1.2.3-1 0- but it makes no difference

I don't understand what the -C command means - I have no /usr/local/ directory, but that is to be created?  Even when changing it to the directory where the download actually is, it won't work.

What am I doing wrong here, except for following instruction I don't understand, without being able to correct them, because I don't understand what they mean?

Since you are running on Ubuntu 16.04, why don't you use the .deb packaging ? Once installed, it will put things at the right place without having you to execute extra commands.

I'm having what looks like the same problem.  I run Linux Mint 18.1.  I downloaded companion 1.2.3 amd64 .deb.  I ran Ark on that file. Got a new folder with three items:  folder 'control.tar.gz', folder 'data.tar.gz' and file 'debian-binary'.
I am stumped.

I have found some instructions about loading the companion:

sudo apt-get install -y libav-tools ubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo apt-get install -y libavcodec-extra-54 libavformat-extra-54

The return for -y libavcodec-extra-54 libavformat-extra-54 is:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

The above are the only instructions I've found.  If there is another url for the companion instructions, please post it.

Thank you, Doug

I am not familiar with the Mint distribution, but if it is not based on Debian (like Ubuntu is), the .deb format may not be what you want. Just use the .tar.gz packaging and follow the instructions to install (2 commands to be run from a shell to complete the install).

If it is based on Debian, you should be able to use the .deb:

sudo dpkg -i net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.3-1_amd64.deb

Thank you Michel,
The instruction you gave worked.  Although, there were some error messages after the install, 1.2.3 .deb companion is now installed in Linux Mint 18.1 and working.  For anyone else who might benefit:
The companion file was downloaded into /home/xxxxx/Downloads.
The command line entry was:  sudo dpkg -i net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.3-1_amd64.deb

Which returned the following on the terminal:
(Reading database ... 354516 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.2.3-1_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking net.downloadhelper.coapp (1.2.3) over (1.1.3) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of net.downloadhelper.coapp:
 net.downloadhelper.coapp depends on libsdl2-2.0-0 (>= 2.0.0); however:
  Package libsdl2-2.0-0 is not installed.

dpkg: error processing package net.downloadhelper.coapp (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 net.downloadhelper.coapp
**************************************

If one were to go by the error messages it would appear that a failed install attempt occurred.  Yet a check of VDH (settings, companion) showed the intended result:
Found companion app: VdhCoApp 1.2.3
Companion app binary: /opt/net.downloadhelper.coapp/bin/net.downloadhelper.coapp-linux-64

Subsequent running of Synaptic Package Manager immediately found the missing dependency and installed what was needed.

I must say releasing install files that work with all linux distributions has been quite a challenge.

Thanks for the feedback, this will be definitely useful to other users.
