Failed to start native messaging host

This started today all of a sudden...

I'm getting the message that the companion app is not installed. I re-install it and get an error message:

Failed to start native messaging host

I'm using the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge. BETA channel/build.

I've used VDH for months without issue until now.

I get this same message on the settings page, under the General tab, at "Companion App not installed". I get:

Checking companion app returned: Failed to start native messaging host.

The Video DownloadHelper Companion App has never worked for me.

I have re-installed it a number of times.

I was unable to get it to work.

I was trying to download a University tutorial video and the [ Use browser ] download method wasn't working.

So naturally I tried the [ Use Companion App ] download method. 

(FYI: If you are not getting this choice you may have checked the "[] Use this method by default next time" check box.

You can probably unset that in Settings)

Anyhow

The work around was to click on the Video DownloadHelper Extention icon on the address bar and select the right-arrow [ o o o > ] beside the video file I wanted to download.

A menu appears with options:

Quick download

Download

Download & Convert

Copy URL

Add to blacklist

Details

Delete

Pin

[ ] Use this action as default

I chose "Copy URL"

I then pasted the copied URL into the address bar of my browser

The video filled the entire page.

Now when I tried to download the video using

Video DownloadHelper

 the [ Use browser ] download method worked, and the download appeared at the bottom of my screen.

Note! The name of the download file was derived from the URL, so you may need to rename it to something meaningful.

I know this doesn't solve the problem with the  Video DownloadHelper Companion App ,

but perhaps it helps you download that video you wanted.
