In honor of everyone's return to school, we offer a multiple choice
set of school-based picks this week! In no particular order:
Sherrybaby (Collyer, 2006)
Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as an ex-con getting back on her feet;
in part by teaching. It's a nice companion to Half Nelson,
which came out the same year.
The Children's Hour (Wyler, 1961)
Shirley MacLaine and Audrey Hepburn star in the scandalous
Lillian Hellman play; one of the first to take on institutional
homophobic hysteria directly.
Battle Royale (Fukasak, 2000)
Think middle school was brutal? In this future, the Japanese
government pit all 9th graders against each other in literal
life-or-death battle; it's a Lord of the Flies for a Brave New
World.
Election (Payne, 1999)
Ferris Bueller grows up? Unforgettable and imminently quotable,
this school election comedy is easily one of the best dark comedies
of all time.
Notes on a Scandal (Eyre, 2006)
Why were so many of the films released in 2006 set in schools?
Fantastic performances by both Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett
take this thriller about a philandering teacher over the top;
it's a story as powerful as any Hitchcock ever told.
Class of 1999 (Lester, 1990)
Hey teachers! Leave those kids alone! Big sci-fi fun that could still
happen here! Full of 80's-flavored techno-paranoia in the classroom,
where the robot teachers are gunning for the bad kids. Starring
Malcolm
McDowell, Pam Grier, and Stacy Keach.
The Trouble With Angels (Lupino, 1966)
Hayley Mills plays against type as a Catholic girls' school
troublemaker. This is the final film directed by Ida Lupino
and co-starring Rosalind Russell.
With All Deliberate Speed (Gilbert, 2004)
Peter "Hoop Dreams" Gilbert turns his lens on those directly affected
by the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision; the power of
the film is in the underlying warning that it offers against history
repeating itself.
Remake Rumormonger
~::~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~::~
Ice Castles
It's unclear whether this remake is destined for the television
screen or the big screen, but this remake of this late-70's ice
skating tearjerker (which starred Lynn-Holly JOhnson and Robby
Benson) now stars figure skater Taylor Firth. Director Donald Wyre,
(who also directed the original) is still around, but there is
no word about whether the rink security will allow the audience to
shower the new ice champion with roses.
