RIP Paul Newman (1925-2008)
We're very sad to acknowledge the passing of Paul Newman, but we're
giving him his own shelves for the next couple of weeks so you can easily
find your Newman favorites, and finally get around to watching those films
you've been meaning to watch.
Some of our favorites? Oh, there are so many choices….where to begin??
The Glass Menagerie (1987) Let's just hope that Paul's passing finally
prompts Them to finally put this out on DVD! Newman directs himself,
Joanne and Malkovich in what might be Tennessee Williams' most
claustrophia-inducing play!
The Long, Hot Summer (1958) The first collaboration between Newman
and Joanne Woodward in story that's still steamy after all these years.
The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) Newman nails the gruff codger role
as Sidney J. Mussburger in one of the Coen brothers' often-overlooked
comedy treasures.
Fort Apache, The Bronx (1981) This gritty, cop-on-the-edge drama
doesn't exactly age well, especially in the wake of The Wire. But it's
still an interesting take on how things were in the bombed-out Bronx.
and it certainly sets the stage for what The Wire would provide.
Tales of Tomorrow: Ice From Space (1952) Another only-on-VHS
experience, but here it is Newman's own very first role in a corny
sci-fi series. He's not given a lot to do or say, but even through the film
grain he's a 28-year-old stud in a wool-lined pilot's jacket. Hell yeah.
Empire Falls (2005) A TV adapation of Richard Russo's novel about
a blue-collar New England town in economic decline, featuring an
amazing ensemble cast including Paul & Joanne, Ed Harris, Philip
Seymour Hoffman, Theresa Russell, Robin Wright Penn, and many more.
A two-parter that is really well worth your time.
We could go on about Butch & Sundance, The Sting, Slap Shot, Hud,
Cool Hand Luke…uh…Torn Curtain, Paris Blues, Sweet Bird of Youth…
It's like he made movies the way he made salsa all good, and all spicy.

Pick of the Week: Miracle at Morgan's Creek (Preston Sturges, 1944)
Preston Sturges out-Apatows the Apatows 33 years before Judd Apatow
was even born with this tale, which, if you take it literally, really makes it
look like the Virgin Mary wasn't trying hard enough. A pointed satire on
the cultural milieu of the 1940's war effort as well as the proto-VIctorian
mores of the Hayes code, it ranks among Sturges' most clever scripts.

Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright, 2004)
Somehow it doesn't seem possible that it's been four years since the funniest
zombie comedy since My Boyfriend's Back was released, but there you have it.
Some folks are still discovering this romantic comedy trapped in the body of
the walking dead, and as Simon Pegg helps to usher in the next British comedy
invasion with Run Fatboy Run and the upcoming US version of his comedy
space show Spaced, it's our duty to remind you of where this maverick funnyman
made his first American splash.

A Chinese elementary school class attempts an exercise in democracy as three
students campaign for the plum role of class monitor. It's a documentary that neatly
fits in alongside light-hearted kiddo docs like Spellbound and Mad Hot Ballroom,
but also with films like Persepolis which provide a deeper perspective on the
role of exported American democracy and culture on the world stage.

Office Killer (Cindy Sherman, 1997)
In honor of the Maryland Film Festival's screening of Guest of Cindy Sherman
(see Film Events Around Town, below) we give you the feature debut of Cindy
Sherman, Office Killer. Starring the amazing Carol Kane in the title role as an
administrative assistant who has had enough and can't take it anymore, with
great support performances by Jeanne Tripplehorn and Molly Ringwald and a
script co-written by Tom Kalin (Swoon, Savage Grace) this is a comedy far
darker than Office Space could ever hope to be.

Included on the DVD for Tully (Hilary Birmingham, 2000)

Rumor has it that Michael Bay (Transformers, Bad Boys) is attached to this Rosemary's
Baby remake, slated for a 2010 release. Bay's already producing remakes of The Birds,
A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th. We're not terribly clear on the raison
d'etre for this remake, but we suppose it's okay if it keeps him off the streets. The only
burning question we have: what will they do to its eyes?
