Snow Storm Recommendations: Rather than a list of holiday favorites,
we'll be recommending some stormy movies this month, so that when that
big storm hits you'll be able to experience the weather from the
comfort of your couch.
- The Thing (1982) – The Classic team of Carpenter and Russell do it
again in this terrifying romp through Antarctica ( a cold snowy land).
The film also addresses those pesky Russian spies that were everywhere
during the Cold War. They could be anyone!
- The Shining (1980) - This movie terrifies everyone! Watch Stanley
Kubrick turn a trashy Steven King book into a cinematic masterpiece.
You'll never want to stay in a snowed in hotel by yourself again for
fear of what phantom businessmen might be doing behind closed doors.
- The Snowman (1982) - Dianne Jackson's hand drawn masterpiece of
children's cinema depicts the journey of a small boy and his snowman
to the most elite holiday party in the world. This silent short is a
subtly beautiful encapsulation of every child's unique skill of
effortlessly experiencing and understanding transcendence and
impermanence. Yes, this is a holiday film, but it's too good not to
recommend.
-The Ice Storm (1997) - The failures of the sunny 1960s become
apparent in this snowy take on 1970s sexuality. Liberation misses the
mark, and the world freezes. Directed by Ang Lee.
- Fargo (1996) - The Coen Bros do it again in this snowy murder
mystery. A smash hit that will keep on hitting, and then dispose of
you in a wood chipper.
- Encounters at the End of the World (2007) - Learn inaccurate
information from Werner Herzog about Antarctica and its inhabitants!
Watch a penguin march to its doom! Check out the special features disc
for an extremely awkward hour long interview of Herzog by Jonathan
Demme.
- Lost Horizons (1937) - Frank Capra takes a departure from his
explicitly class conscious films and crash lands in the snowy
Himalayas, where we find the mystical and temperate Shangri-La.
- McCabe and Mrs Miller (1971) - A sad, funny, western, anti-western,
wintry mix directed by Robert Altman with Warren Beatty and Julie
Christie.
- The Day after Tomorrow (2004) - Roland Emmerich directs Jake
Gyllenhaal in this disaster movie, preparing for one of the possible
outcomes of 2012: massive climate change. This movie is actually quite
bad, but you might enjoy it if you like apocalyptic cinema or find
George W. Bush's administration upsetting.
