Twitch City (1998)
This 14-episode Canadian tv series is fantastic
dark comedy. Curtis (played by acclaimed director
Don McKellar) is a couch potato of great magnitude;
his television obsession propels his household (which
includes Deadwood's Molly Parker) into a series of
increasingly surreal scenarios. Think of a long, funny
"Kids In The Hall" skit directed by Michel Gondry and
you'll be in the neighborhood of Twitch City.
Remake Rumormonger
~::~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~::~
A glut of TV remakes are about to descend upon us;
many of them bent on ensuring that the 1980's never
die. Surely, what these imminent series lack in quality
will be made up for in quantity. Plump up your couch
cushions and settle in while your boob tube serves up:
* Teen Wolf -- Being transformed into a more horror-
driven series by MTV; no idea whether or not the wolf
in question will still be a hoops superstar!
* Heathers -- After years of threats of a remake or
sequel feature film, Fox is re-envisioning Heathers
as a television series. The fatal flaw? "Heather" was
the 14th most popular name for girls in 1988; by 2008
it had fallen to 487th place.
* V -- Just as the original "V" series arrived hot on
the heels of the original "Battlestar Galactica," the ABC
remake of V will arrive in November. Only this time, "V"
will get to capitalize on the paranoia that fueled the BSG
remake; let's just hope it doesn't have a cop-out finale, too.
* Skins -- Baltimore will be the setting for the MTV
remake of the British series about the antics of drug-
addled, sex-crazed teens. Will the cast remain as
white-washed as the cast of "He's Just Not That Into You"?

Nineteen23 is a monthly film series highlighting short,
nontheatrical films made since the 16mm film gauge was
introduced in 1923. From documentary and avant-garde
cinema to factory and scientific films, this series
will feature works that were never screened in movie
theaters and are, in many cases, not available on DVD.
Lost genres and forgotten films will be resurrected each
month, along with contemporary work that has been influenced
by the long shadow of the cinema.
