Director of the Month:
Birthday boy Werner Herzog turns 69 today, and since he is my favorite
director, I'm asking
everyone to celebrate his work all month long. If you're into wildly
subjective (arguably misinformative) documentaries and narrative films
that seep into reality, then you may just fall for him the way I have.
His recent documentaries include Wheel of Time (about Tibetan Buddhist
sand painting), The White Diamond (about Dr. Graham Dorrington's
heroic flight through the Guyana Rain Forest), and Encounters at the
End of the World (about people living and working in Antarctica).
Apart from that he's all about Hollywood now with Rescue Dawn starring
Christian Bale and The Bad Lieutenant starring Nicholas Cage. And if
you've never seen a Herzog film, any film snob will require that you
watch Aguirre the Wrath of God and Fitzcaraldo, both of which star
Herzog muse Klaus Kinski. If I haven't convinced you of how wonderful

Back to School Picks of the Week
-Encino Man (1992) Pauly Shore helps a caveman who has wandered into
the 20th century become the most popular guy in school. How can a
caveman be so cool when native 20th century guys are so lame?
-Brick (2005) What if Raymond Chandler wrote about the experiences of
a modern Los Angeles high school student? This movie will tell you.
-Strangers With Candy (1999, 2005) Amy Sedaris returns to high school
as one of the toughest, 40 year old broads you will ever meet. The
ensemble work here is amazing, ever person shines. Each episode ends
with a dance party (check out Principal Blackman, he'll knock your
socks off!) Choose the TV show or the 2005 movie.
-The 400 Blows (1959 Truffaut) This one's not so much about going to
school, as it is about trying not to go to school. A welcome escape
for any adolescent who doesn't like school and loves the French New
Wave.
-X-Men: First Class (2011) When will we get over the sixties? When
will we get over super hero movies? This movie doesn't really have the
original X-men team in it, but I had fun anyway. Aren't those young
little X-men cute?
-Werner Herzog Eats his Shoe (1980 Les Blank): He said he would, and
he did! (We have this movie on VHS as well as on DVD. If you need DVD,
you'll find the movie in the special features section on Les Blank's
great documentary Burden of Dreams, which is about the making of
Herzog's Fitzcaraldo)

The Charles Theatre Revival Series is back in action at the Charles
