Welcome to the March 2012 edition of the VA Newsletter! This month's issue is focusing on politics within the safe confines of the movies. As there's one month to go until the Maryland Presidential Primary Election, we're all supposed to be closely following the battle for the executive, right? I'm not really sure what my civic responsibility is regarding that competition, but for better or worse, I do know that I'd rather be watching movies about election campaigns than the current debates. RECOMMENDATIONS: Campaign Films

- The Manchurian Candidate (1962): Classic thriller involving Cold War politics, brainwashing, an assassination plot, and blackmail. Directed by John Frankenheimer (Ronin, The Iceman Cometh) and starring Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury.

- The Ides of March (2011): George Clooney helmed winner of the Brian Prize at the Venice International Film Festival!

- Black Sheep (1996): No award winner here folks. This sub-par Chris Farley and David Spade comedy is one of only two movies Gene Siskel walked out on in 26 years. The film was panned by almost all critics, so watch at your own risk

- Election (1999): Director Alexander Payne's (The Descendants) second feature film is a darkly comic exploration of intersection of high school social life and US politics.

- Where the Buffalo Roam (1980): Yes, we have Johnny Depp's most recent portrayal of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary, but why not check out Bill Murray's bizarre and somewhat more subtle take on the iconoclast? This film includes portions from Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, 1972 in addition to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

- The War Room (1993): Great documentary about Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign. Soon to be released by the Criterion Collection.

- Feed (1992): Documentary footage from the New Hampshire primary in 1992. Includes some really hysterical and sometimes very sad footage of George Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Pat Buchanan.

- The Times of Harvey Milk (1984): A very important movie. Recommended for all current and aspiring politicians.

- The Great McGinty (1940): Classic political satire from director Preston Sturges (The Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels).
