Halloween Recommendations

Deep Red (1975) One of director Dario Argento's best films. Standard
giallo dealing with a murder mystery, a writer, and a lot of gore, but
it also has quite beautiful classical and modern art direction.
The Descent (2005) A group of women go spelunking and encounter some
monsters. Sound like an average modern horror movie premise? It is,
but it gets much more twisted than you imagine.
Hour of the Wolf (1968) Director Ingmar Bergman's archetypal Gothic
Horror film heavily steeped in Freudian Psychology. The cerebral
Halloween treat.
Innocents (1961) Director Jack Clayton's adaptation of The Turn of the
Screw.
Island of Lost Souls (1932) This adaptation of The Island of Dr.
Moreau, is required viewing for classic horror film buffs; and to
prove it, the Criterion Collection releases it tomorrow with
commentary, interviews, and a short film by Devo!
Jacob's Ladder (1990) So you shouldn't really know anything about this
movie before you see it, but we'll inform you that it deals with PTSD
and how it's as scary as any demon. This movie is intense.
Joy Ride (2001) Everybody knows about this movie and everybody thinks
it's going to be bad, but my colleague thinks it's good and he knows
that it's written by JJ Abrams. It addresses how horrifying it is that
we all just agree to follow the rules of the road by making you aware
of the insane power of those who refuse to abide. Steve Zhan is cute
in it too.
Kwaidan (1965) Four serious, sad, subtle, and pretty Japanese ghost
stories directed by Masaki Kobayashi.
Let the Right One In (2008) Probably the best vampire movie ever. Sure
there's Murnau's Nosferatu and Herzog's one too, but we're in a
changing world, and this film gets a lot closer to how our instinctual
nature relates to modern society and the experience of control.
The Wicker Man (1973) Written by Anthony Shaffer, this is a thrilling
venture into mob mentality, secret societies, and beautiful Scottish
landscapes. It is very well written and very scary.

Film Events around Town

Gunky's Basement (http://whamcity.com/wordpress/gunkys-basement/):
On Tuesday, October 25th at 9 PM you can catch David Cronenberg's
Videodrome at the Charles Theatre hosted by Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe
Roche. This controversial film is not for the faint of heart, but if
you can stomach it, you'll be treated to some remarkably accurate
cinematic predictions regarding torture porn like the Saw series and
technological advancement towards virtual reality like Avatar. When
will these trends cross paths? Have they already? I honestly don't
know. If you do, please post the answer on our facebook page.

Revival Series at the Charles Theater (http://thecharles.com/go/
revivals):
This week's revival is The Matrix. Some people have a good time
watching it and some people have problems with the philosophy. You can
make up your own mind on Thursday, October 27th at 9 PM.
Check the Charles Website for the next batch of revivals, which was
just posted today. Take special note of director Nobuhiko Obayashi's
House (Hausu) playing on November 10th only. This psychedelic Japanese
Horror film from 1977 just got its US theatrical release last year and
was a huge hit with almost all of the people I know (We also carry the
Criterion Collection release of the film, which features Obayashi's
1966 avant-garde film Emotion).

Free screening of !Women Art Revolution at Towson University followed
by panel discussion (www.womenartrevolutiontowson.wordpress.com):
An entertaining and revelatory “secret history” of Feminist Art, !
Women Art Revolution by Lynn Hershman Leeson deftly illuminates this
under-explored movement through conversations, observations, archival
footage and works of visionary artists, historians, curators and
critics. Starting from its roots in 1960s antiwar and civil rights
protests, the film details major developments in women's art through
the 1970s and explores how the tenacity and courage of these
pioneering artists resulted in what is now widely regarded as the most
significant art movement of the late 20th century.
