Celebrating AFI (Multiple Directors, 2003)
Why fight your ADD when you can rent a great collection of short
subjects? We took another look at this collection because of the lead-
off short, Brian Hecker's "Family Attraction." Hecker helmed Bart Got
A Room, the hilarious if slightly unsatisfying teen comedy featuring
Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development's Maebe), William H. Macy and
Cheryl Hines. "Family Attraction" (1988) takes a look at America's
last nuclear family (headed by the late, great Chris Penn) who is held
in capitivity; it sets the tone for this collection of dark,
whimsical, and star-packed shorts.
The collection also includes "The Chili Con Carne Club" (Jonathan
Kahn , 1993) -- an unsettling cautionary tale about male bonding and
prison starring a creepily musclebound, pre-DUI Mel Gibson and a post-
Buffy Kristy Swanson. "The Car Kid" stars James Franco, Meatloaf and
the late, great Brad Renfro in the short that would later be remade
into the feature Killer Diller by the same director, Tricia Brock, in
2004; the films tell the tale of a paroled guitar player who turns his
halfway house fellows into a full-tilt blues band. "Fair Play" (Joanie
Wread, 2002) stars Ed Asner and John Heard in another cautionary tale
- this time about sports and shoplifting.
The real hidden treasure is Michael Kalmen's "Bar Time: A San
Francisco Soap Opera" (1979). It's dated fun from a former
collaborator of The Cockettes, and it's exactly what you might expect
from title. It's of note to watch now that Harvey Milk has been
elevated in the national consciousness.

We video geeks like to keep an eye on the remakes that They like to
threaten to make from time to time – and it seems like our Brave New
World is gearing up for lots and lots of sci-fi remakes in the not-too-
distant future. Some of them pique our interest, some make us yawn and
a select few scare us so much we lose sleep.
