Director of the Month: Nicholas Roeg
The Revival Series is back at the Charles Theater (http://
thecharles.com/go/revivals)! They're running Steven Spielberg movies
through the end of the month, which is fun and all but also an oeuvre
with which we're all pretty familiar. So what we're really looking
forward to here at VA is Nicholas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth
with David Bowie, which is showing the first week of September. If
you're not familiar with Roeg, we highly recommend coming by and
checking out Performance (1970), Walkabout (1971), Don't Look Now
(1973), and Bad Timing (1980). The movies all deal with aliens,
figurative more so than literal, struggling to survive in the modern
world. His style relies heavily (an understatement) on zooms and
elliptical, nonlinear narratives, which synch up well with his
characters' chaotic confrontations with unexplored realms of the
psyche ranging from adolescent rites of passage to psychic phenomena.
Also, these movies look great! They're really pretty!

Picks of the Week
If you're into the alienation theme but not tragedy, which all of
Roeg's films are, then check out these more or less warm and fuzzy
alienation alternatives:
-Starman (1984) Learn to love the other, who in this case is played by
the charming and adorable Jeff Bridges.
-Explorers (1985) Child stars Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix in a
family friendly space adventure. Even if the modern world can't accept
these far-out kids, aliens can! Directed by Joe Dante of The Howling
and Gremlins fame.
-Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Good clean anti-nuclear cinema, in
which the alien becomes our savior.
-Encino Man (1992) Pauly Shore helps a caveman who has wandered into
the 20th century to become the most popular guy in school. How can a
caveman be so cool when native 20th century guys are so lame?
-Paul (2011) Simon Pegg and Nick Frost wrote and star in this buddy
comedy with Seth Rogen playing their zany alien pal.
-Dumbo (1941) He gets picked on and it's upsetting. Pay special
attention to the clowns, which are caricatures of the studio's
animators that were striking during production. Uncle Walt apparently
wasn't all that sincere in his message of acceptance .
-Quiet Earth (1985) In this New Zeland movie three people wake up to
find that a project to create a global energy grid has produced the
side effect of disappearing everyone on the planet! Where did they go?
