Well, did it again, nabbing Baltimore's "Best Place to Rent Videos" from the City
Paper! How lucky we were we for this year's DVD release of Mondo Cane? Congrats
to former VA employee Eric Hatch for winning best film series, and all of this year's
other film winners!

reason, you've missed out on the true joy of the funniest filmmaker

Pick of the Week: Sullivan's Travels (Preston Sturges, 1941)
The popular pick for Sturges' masterpiece, it's Sturges take on class through the
peculiar lens of wartime Hollywood. The short version: a bigtime comedy director sets
off to explore the gritty truths about poverty in America with nothing but the tailored suit
on his back. Forget Sarah Marshall -- this is what comedy at its most complex, dark,
and hilarious can be, and it's a perfect way to cut your teeth on the Sturges canon.

New Cult Classic
Ladies & Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains! (Lou Adler, 1981)
An underground classic finally gets a proper DVD release. Diane Lane
(Unfaithful, Rumble Fish) and Laura Dern (Citizen Ruth, Inland Empire)
star in an all-girl punk rock band movie from 1982. Complete with
punk rock gods Fee Waybill, Paul Cook, Steve Jones and Paul Simonon,
this DVD release is a must-see! Completists will also want to rent
John 3:16/The Rainbow Man from our House Favorites doc section, as
it includes an incredible extra: Sarah Jacobson's fantastic documentary
on the making of The Fabulous Stains. Sarah Jacobson, who was to
filmmaking what Kathleen Hanna is to rock & roll, died in 2004; you

Horror/Halloween Pick
Count Yorga, Vampire (Bob Kelljan, 1971)
It's hard out there for a vamp, especially one caught in a up in the
horrors of post-industrialist modernity, and it's not just Buffy's
fault. Most of the bloodsucking freaks these days couldn't hold a
candle to Nosferatu, but Count Yorga gives it a pretty good go. The
debonair Robert Quarry takes his manners to terrorize LA. Great
Hammer-esque atmosphere -- it's well worth a look.
Election Special
Man From Plains (Jonathan Demme, 2007)
This Jonathan Demme-directed doc explores the controversy surrounding
Jimmy Carter's book tour for "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid." Regardless
of your stance on Carter, it's a compelling, complex film about one
ex-president who still gets out of the house. Also worth a watch on
this disc is a fascinating featurette on the music recording sessions,
featuring performances by Gillian Welch, Alejandro Escovedo, and an
international ensemble that has to be seen to be believed.
TriPPPle Feature
Excerise your three-for-two privileges with a John Candy mini-marathon!
1. Canadian Bacon (Michael Moore, 1995)
Candy is caught in a web of international intrigue as the US cooks up
a cold war with Canada, getting the jump on Team America by a full decade!
Michael Moore's only narrative feature film so far, with featured
performances from Alan Alda, Rip Torn and Steven Wright.
2. SCTV Season 4, Volume 3
In the "Towering Inferno" episode, Candy plays Divine playing Peter Pan
in a community theater production. More meta than rolling thunder; you
must witness this.
3. Planes, Trains and Automobiles (John Hughes, 1987)
A special blend of Candy, Hughes, Steve Martin and the holidays -- which
are coming whether you like it or not. Great for the fantastic cameo by
Edie McClurg, it may also spark a little nostalgia for when air travel
was...simple.
