I was just informed by my colleague that a lot of people in the USA
are excited about Sweeps Month (TV Show Premiere Month for people like
me who are unfamiliar with the “Sweeps” lingo), which is apparently
happening right now. Now I'm not going to say that you should watch
movies instead of TV (after all Video Stores are only around because
of this Television invention), but we're gonna try to broaden
everyone's experience of TV in this issue with some films and shows
that provide different perspectives of this box and the people sending
the signals.

Overlooked TV Shows
Our current Golden Age of Television (e.g. HBO, Showtime, etc. and
even some of the recent network output) has yielded some fantastic
programming. Unfortunately, even with mainstream TV's creative
breakthroughs, many foreign and more or less independent artists' work
in the medium is overlooked and forgotten. So next time you're in the
store, try bypassing our monumental Television Section and checking
out some of the shows in the Director's Room. Some of my favorites
include:
- Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980 Criterion Collection) New German Cinema
Director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 14 part adaptation of Alfred
Doblin's novel follows Franz Biberkopf's tragic adventures in search
of work and love in Berlin after being released from prison in the
late 1920s. Through Franz's attempts to transform himself, Fassbinder
delves deep into German collective identity - its disintegration after
World War I and reactionary political assertions through Naziism and
Communism before the second World War.
- Fishing With John (1991) John Lurie (Stranger Than Paradise, Down By
Law) stars in this mock fishing program in which John along with a
guest (Willem Dafoe, Tom Waits, Dennis Hopper, Jim Jarmusch, Matt
Dillon) embark on a quest to fish but end up exploring the strange
relationships between human beings and the wrath of mother nature.
- The Kingdom (1994) Danish Director Lars Von Trier's haunted hospital
soap opera may be the closest you're going to get to seeing another
Twin Peaks. It's got ghosts, monsters, secret societies, and
relentless jokes at the expense of Sweden. It's a lot of fun and very
intelligent. Also, for those who are weary of Lars's enfant terrible
persona and provocative filmmaking style, this is by far his most tame
production.
- First Person (2000) Acclaimed Documentarian Errol Morris takes
talking heads to a whole new level in this mini-series. He gets some
exceptionally candid stories through his invention the “Interrotron,”
a device through which he is able to constantly maintain eye contact
with the interviewee. Subjects range from Mutter Museum Director
Gretchen Worden to Temple Grandin to one of the first contestants on
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Fascinating!
So those are my favorites, but there's certainly a lot more. You might
also like Roberto Rosselini's Age of the Medici, the Criterion
Collection's Golden Age of Television (1950s TV specials including
work by John Frankenheimer), David Lynch's Twin Peaks, and Slings &
Arrows (a Canadian soap about a Shakespearean theater company, in
which the soap opera's narrative parallels one of the bard's great
tragedies each season).

Film Picks of the Week
-Network (1976) My TV-savvy colleague says that it is vital that
everyone see this movie by director Sidney Lumet as soon as possible.
It's an entertaining depiction of how the mass media manipulates our
reality, leaving only madness in its wake. If you are wondering why
things seem so crazy these days, you need not look any further than
Network.
-Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) George Clooney's directorial
debut was adapted from the diaries of game show host and CIA assassin
Chuck Barris. Watch as Barris develops ideas for his terrible TV shows
(e.g. the Dating Game, the Newlywed Game, and the Gong Show) while
dealing with the angst of killing people for the C.I.A.
-Good Night and Good Luck (2006) Remember back when TV had class? This
movie directed by George Clooney does. Edward R. Murrow's TV program
engages in ideological combat with Joe McCarthy's Red Scare.
-UHF (1989) Poor little “Weird” Al drew the short straw on this movie.
His big screen debut had to compete with Indiana Jones and the Last
Crusade and Batman at the box office. This nerdy gem about a little
UHF station trying to raise enough money to stay open is chock full of
Mr. Yankovich's humorous brand of spoofiness.
-Truman Show (1998) Quite possibly the most touching thing that Jim
Carey has ever done. If you think the world revolves around you, take
a look at Truman's life. It seems like that would be a terrible way to
live. Directed by Peter Weir.
-Bamboozled (2000) Director Spike Lee explores the tradition of
minstrel shows and popular trends in television. Possibly Lee's most
focused political statement to date next to When the Levees Broke.
-A Face in the Crowd (1957) Classic depiction of one man's meteoric
rise from hobo to TV superstar. A highly emotional journey through
this country's delusional myth of fame starring Andy Griffith and
directed by Elia Kazan film.
-Encino Man (1992) Pauly Shore helps a caveman who has wandered into
the 20th century to become the most popular guy in school. How can a
caveman be so cool when native 20th century guys are so lame?
