I am very interested to read Sylvia Pettem's recently published history article that reports that dancing was enjoyed in Boulder at the December holidays in the earliest years of "Boulder City, Nebraska Territory".

"In 1859 the men took turns crowding into a hastily built cabin, the only one with a wooden floor suitable for dancing."

"In 1877 the Episcopalians held their Christmas ball at the American House Hotel in Gold Hill. Couples in elegant evening attire waltzed to the tunes of Titcomb's Quadrille Band, then stopped for a midnight buffet. It was reported that strains of music floated on the air, mingled with the sound of feet in the mazes of the dance."

"Columbia Lodge No. 14 of the Masonic Order and their guests held thier dance in Union Hall on the second floor of a building on Pearl Street. (Above today's Army/Navy Store?!) A few days later, the same hall was used for the Boulder Fire Company's Masquerade Ball. Titcomb's band performed again, and people stood on seats and on tiptoe, singing along with the music. After the costumed revelers had another midnight supper, they continued dancing until 4 a.m."

"At yet another party, some of the young ladies were caught under the mistletoe, with the usual result, much to the amusement of those who escaped!"
