Well, I finally got around to dabbling a bit more with canvas. You can see my very simple demo at:

http://victoria-open-web.googlegroups.com/web/canvas.html?gda=OtfigT0AAADq-9lAAxOIVOikC54BlQhnmSZ7BcCBcDvZbNAWkjMTpj0gMlNpZQTk1YPgNc9yDcnlNv--OykrTYJH3lVGu2Z5

With the recent announcement of Bespin [https://bespin.mozilla.com/], canvas is becoming a more interesting API. If anyone else is interested, I'd like to spend more time digging into this topic.

For those that are interested, I just added IE support to canvas smiley face. This can be found here:

http://victoria-open-web.googlegroups.com/web/canvas2.html?gda=hSBKvD4AAADq-9lAAxOIVOikC54BlQhnTkGuFKbBR0ZX9lrsHxRPVg2nGrNYa_enVW9kN9gnCo_jsKXVs-X7bdXZc5buSfmx&gsc=GE8qqwsAAADyvEMHnAQKxO5O-25SBiNd

I tested in IE7 only, so if anybody else sees an issue with IE6 or 8, please let me know. Adding IE support was as easy as including one script tag, like so:

<!--[if IE]><script type="text/javascript" src="http://explorercanvas.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/excanvas.js"></script><![endif]-->
