It is recommended that you have the basics of Mahjong under your belt, whether that's Hong Kong style or Riichi.

If you've never played Riichi before, there's plenty of ways to familiarize yourself with the game. I recommend this series by "Light Grunty" on Youtube who covers the basics clearly. He has a couple different playlists on his account:

I also recommend diginova's Riichi Cheat Sheets as a much easier to digest list of possible hands in Riichi. His cheat sheet and teaching sheets are excellent.
