Sometimes lately the light has been quite good for B&W
photography and despite the cold fingers, I've got out several times.
One of my New Year's resolutions, which I'm starting early, is to go
back and re-visit some old and friendly developers that I used to use
a good deal long ago. One of these is ID-3. Anyone ever use it? I've
done a dozen sheets or more in it, the past few weeks, and discovered
that I still like it a great deal.
ID-3 is not a commercial product. It is like D-23 and some other
distinctive old developers, a home-made thing, and it is:
Metol ......................................... 6 g
Sodium sulphite, anhydrous ...... 50 g
Sodium carbonate ......................100 g
Potassium bromide .................... 1 g
Water ........................ To make 1 litre
It has some lovely characteristics. I've been doing HP5 and FP4
in it lately. Make up one or two litres and then, for use, dilute it
1+3, and discard it afterward. I can supply developing times for some
films, if anyone is interested. The concentrate keeps well in a glass
bottle for up to 6-8 months.
If anyone would like to try this and can't make it at home, I can
mix a litre for you to try. The catch is that you would have to pick
it up yourself. I've just made my quarterly trip to Victoria, and
won't be down again until about late January if then.
I hope some of you are getting out a bit, even if you don't brag
about it o the group site?
Seasons greetings
Jim
