I wonder if anyone has sent a E-6 sheet film to Vancouver recently?
My last shipment was about a year ago or more, and I am no longer
sure just who is developing the stuff any longer: Is it CustomColor,
or does anyone know the current situation?

Sorry for the delay in answering, Jim--I was distracted. I haven't sent anything to Vancouver in almost a year, so I don't have current knowledge, but I'd also be very interested in knowing the current state of affairs. The last time I did send some 4x5 (chromes, I think), it took so long to get them back that I'm left wondering if Pro Photo is sub-contracting LF work out, likely to CustomColour.

If anyone knows something about the situation, I'd appreciate hearing about it as well.

Cheers,

Don:
I have it on the "authority" of one of the local people here
that CustomColor is doing all the large format E-6 (and C-41) now. I
suspect I will have some sheets to go over in the next week or ten
days, and will let you know after that. I have been considering doing
some C-41 myself.
Hope you've been able to use a little film the past few months?

Regards
Jim

Ah, I suspected as much. Not much point in sending things to Pro Photo, then, is there? Shame, really, as I quite liked dealing with the woman who did the shipping--a very cheerful and considerate person.

> I suspect I will have some sheets to go over in the next week or ten days

Do let me know how it goes, especially turn-around times.

>I have been considering doing some C-41 myself.

Gads--I haven't done that since the '70s, I don't think! Back then, even the Agfa Kit required somewhat fanatical temperature control, which was a little difficult. I hear things are quite a bit easier with some kits now.

>>Hope you've been able to use a little film the past few months?

Alas, I've been ridiculously lazy :} But, with unmistakable signs of growth out there (snatched the chance to mow the back yard yesterday), some adventures in the woods can't be too far off. I don't know why, but I have an urge to tackle a triptych in the forest. Three verticals, blown up to 16x20 or so, would look great on one of my downstairs walls. Heck, said wall is already painted 12% grey...

Cheers,

A triptych! That's ambitious. Maybe you ought to start with a diptych
just to come out of hibernation?
In any case, it sounds like something for 8X10.
I will await further news and a progress report....

>A triptych! That's ambitious.

Nothing too adventurous, really: I'm thinking more of a 'segmented panorama'. I'm sometimes frustrated in trying to represent a forest scene, in that it seems to call for a very wide perspective, and this may be a way to represent what my eye sees when I'm standing there. Printing large would enhance the 'you-are-there' sense, I think, especially if I can find a location with a great detail on of forest floor, too.

>In any case, it sounds like something for 8X10.

I was just thinking of 8x10 yesterday, as it happens. The new View Camera mag just hit the stands, and it was a spread on some ethereal portraiture done with direct-positive paper (presumably the new-ish Ilford product). Very interesting stuff. I do wish they'd given some more details, like any filters, if any, and contrast controls. For paper, it's rather expensive, and some even crude guidance would be a help before having a go at it. Hmm, perhaps the artist has a web site with some documentation on his process...

New line of direct-positive paper?  Sweet, that may be just enough to rekindle my interest in pinhole, if I can get my hands on some and nail down the exposure and development needed.

Of course shooting pinholes at f/250 or whatver will be extra fun using paper with an ISO rating around 3.....

Hm, looks like it is not available currently, due to issues with Ilford's supplier.

Walter:  I saw a supply in Camera Traders earlier this week, and I’m pretty sure Lens & Shutter has some as well.

Just for fun, I rummaged around and found an exposure calculator online that would deal with extreme values (http://www.endoflow.com/exposure/) and plugged in an EV 15 (bright/hazy sun), EI 3, and f/250.  Result was a 65 second exposure. I strongly suspect this does not take reciprocity into effect, so a better value might be triple that :}

But, hey—what could be more fun than hanging about in bright sun for three minutes, right?

From Ilford press release today:

Following an absence of over a year ILFORD PHOTO are pleased to announce that HARMAN DIRECT POSITIVE FB paper is now back in full production at the factory in Mobberley, England.

HARMAN DIRECT POSITIVE FB paper is a high quality, traditional silver gelatine black and white, high contrast paper, on a 255g/m2 fiber base with a Glossy surface.

It is primarily suited for use in pinhole cameras where exposure and processing in conventional black and white photochemistry achieves a unique positive print - without the need for a film negative or inter-negative.
