Don (and anyone else interested):
I have had several E-6 and C-41 sheet jobs done in Vancouver
over the past three or four months, and I found that while The Lab,
Custom Color and ABC all advertise E-6 and C-41 processing, ABC is
the least expensive, and it is no slower than the others. I never did
find out whether all three do their own processing but I suspect they
do - or at least, ABC and TheLab seem to.
Part of the delay in sending and receiving work is that I do not
check for mail every day, so they may be "faster" than I think they are.

I hope you're making a few exposures once in a while?

Thanks for the info, Jim. Alas, I have not had *any* opportunities for shooting in recent months--either it was ridiculously hot, or pissing down rain, it seemed. But, now that things have returned to some semblance of "normalcy", maybe I can zoom out and shoot some chromes at long last.

Bu coincidence, I got an email notice from Lenswork today about some upcoming half-day seminars in Anacortes, and thought you might be interested in the one on "Printing & Publishing: The fundamentals of offset printing for fine art photographers." Details here:

Thanks Don, it does sound interesting. Many many years ago I worked
in a press for about a year, so I am familiar with offset, litho and
other processes.
I understand that one of the Island colleges or universities also
offers courses for self-publishers.
I have to admit, I find it much more work than I anticipated, and I
am wavering, tempted to return to an established publisher....
Let me know if you need encouragement in your photographic adventures.

While I never worked in a print shop, I was involved with getting a lot of material printed through the Q.P., so I'm aware of a lot of the potentially headache-inducing techie stuff :} Some of it can make one's head spin.

If the weather co-operates, perhaps I can make a trek north of the Malahat soon...

The last time I used ABC Photo for some 4x5 E-6 work, I was somewhat annoyed at how long it took. But, with Jim's relatively recent report that they seemed okay, I gave them another shot recently, and was pleasantly surprised. I sent off the package in the mail on a Friday, and they called to say it was ready to ship the following Friday. Not bad at all. For six sheets, and shipping by conventional post, it came to $38.33 tax included.

Don:
I don't do much colour any more, but that was about my
experience too. They use some express or parcel co. and those
expensive lazy louts don't work on weekends, so in fact half or more
of the time involved is in-transit. It is best to ship at or near the
start of a week, otherwise your film sits in storage for two or more
days before it ever reaches the lab.
