I vaguely recall someone (was it Walter?) saying that ABC is sending
E-6 to CustomColor now - is this correct? It seems to take much
longer to come back than it used to, and is more expensive for
process AND shipping than a few months ago?
I hope some of you are using the sometimes lovely light for more than
just reading on a park bench?

I noticed that as well, but don't recall hearing anything about them farming
out the E-6 work. As for the prices, the only past record I have dates back
to the summer of 2010, when 4x5 E-6 was $2.75 a pop. That is now $4.99, so
it is up rather sharply. Usually, I only have enough to fit in a small box,
so I have Wendy ship it back regular mail in the same box, not express, so
that saves a fair bit.

I see their processing charge for 8x10 is only $10.49, so you're getting a
great deal compared to my smaller format! Hmm...if I glued four sheets
together, I could save 50% on processing...

That would be very tricky - gluing 4 - 4X5 sheets edge-to-edge! it
would deserve some sort of recognition....

On quite another matter: Does anyone in the group use an Epson 2400
printer? I had one, and it finally quit, giving me the message "Your
printer has reached the end of hits life" - it seems they actually
build in this "end" and it doesn't matter whether you were right in
the middle of doing some important prints or proofs.
Anyway, I have switched to Canon printers as of yesterday. But I have
a lot of ink cartridges for the Epson 2400 which Epson stuck me with
- I had just bought some of them before my machine "reached the end"
- so if anyone has that printer model, I can give you some free
cartridges.
Fine light and cloud today - wish I'd been out to photograph it!

Hi Jim,

This is the explanation for the Epson R2400 error:
http://youtu.be/LCax0mqIAOs

Most likely all you need to do is install an external waste ink tank on the R2400:
http://youtu.be/rHwu2bsKVPs

They can be bought quite cheaply on eBay, for example:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/160997255837

I did that with my R2400 and it worked fine after that.

I took some E-6 into Kerrisdale Cameras here in Victoria a littole while ago
and they shipped them out for me. I was told that CustomColour was the only
lab in YVR handling E-6 anymore. Then, to add some further sting to the
issue, they demanded that I pay for the processing in advance. The only
explanation they could offer was that some people dropped off film for
processing and then never returned to pick up/pay up. I think it took about
10 days to ship, process and return.

Jim: If you decide against Simon's suggestions on prolonging the life of
your R2400, I'd happily take those cartridges off your hands. Mind hasn't
given me that warning yet...

"Fine light and cloud today" -- Gee, wish we had that! The early morning
had potential here, but it's been increasingly crappy looking ever since.

Cheers,

Don:
I didn't decide against Simon's solution, I tried the web site
and was able to "resuscitate" the printer at least temporarily, but I
have a Canon printer on the way so the offer still stands. I'm not
sure how many unused inks there are, will have to check, about 6 I
think. I'll save them for you.
I have no plans to come down to Victoria soon so if you can
think of a way to get the inks...
Did manage to use some of the light today, but I missed the best
of it. Ah well, perhaps tomorrow morning.

Good heavens--that's a lot! I shall have to at least treat you to a good
lunch!

>I have no plans to come down to Victoria soon so if you can think of a

I'm not low on anything at the moment (and not doing much printing), so
there's no rush at all. I'm sure something will come up that'll get us
together sooner or later.

As for your Epson, have you thought of reconfiguring it as a pure monochrome
printer? I saw some results of this sort of adaptation at Luz gallery last
year, and was quite impressed with the smooth tonal gradation and the detail
in the shadows that they could attain. I'm not sure what all is involved,
but I suspect it's both different inks and perhaps a RIP. And if one is
going that far, a thought might be given to converting to bulk ink tanks
too--those tiny cartridges are both expensive and irritating.

Cheers and thanks, Jim!

On a good day, i.e., low smog, pollution etc ...., the autumn lighting is quite pleasant amidst the early evening light of buildings.

Thanks Simon; there used to be another place that supplied graded
blacks or greys for the old 2200 printer, and I tried them and they
were good - I can't remember the name offhand, but they also made
interesting papers. Lyson was the name. Did you ever try them?

Hi Jim,

I have never tried them but I have seen samples from the Cone ink sets.
