What a fantastic couple of days of fun, banter, great weather, good golf and good food, and all under the very generous watchful eyes of Captain Fred Valentine, who made sure that nobody went home without their fill of good wine and prizes.  If you weren't there, then you may not understand some of the report, but there is a solution to that dilemma: be there in 2016!  The course was in fabulous condition, with greens like carpets, and par fours like ... well, monster holes!  We seemed to piggy back on another society of Yorkshire lads, and the banter carried on throughout the two days, including a kickboxing demonstration that ended up with Della Thomas finally laying out a Yorkshire lad flat on his back in the bar, and a competition to recover a magician’s card from the ceiling which Peter S ‘scoop’ Watson finally mastered without the need for a pyramid climbing exercise (that was Charles’ offering).  Charles Shepherd did manage to ‘win’ the shortest drive on day 2, right under the nose of the starter, with a drive that was shorter than the distance by which he beat Peter’s drive on day 1, and everyone was just amazed by Della’s tongue (.... proudly displayed on her driver head cover!).

Down to the business of golf, the Captain’s prize was won by Kevin Allars, with 56 points over the two days, but he had to really give his all to come through the pack, as Renee Lock won on day 1 with 33 points, with Kevin 2nd on 30 points, and the other Kevin (Kevin O’Donnell) won on day 2 with 30 points, with Paul Stanson 2nd on 27 points.  This all meant that Kevin O’Donnell came 2nd overall on 55 points, with Paul Stanson 3rd on 52 points.  Charles Shepherd and Kevin Allars won the longest drives, both beating Peter S Watson’s mighty drives, although Sue O’Donnell did have her name on the longest drive board on two occasions for a while: she also supplied everyone with delightful home-made cookies on both days.  The nearest the pin on the 3rd hole (over water) was a nightmare, and nobody actually made it onto the green – along came Fred with a solution of ‘nearest to two greens on day 2’ which produced winners in Renee Lock and Captain Fred himself.  Minor competitions included winning threesomes, with Peter, Renee and Della talking themselves to the trophy on day 1, and Peter and Della repeating the win, but with Kevin O’Donnell this time, on day 2.

The meal on the Sunday was held in the hotel’s private trophy room (it looked more like a boardroom!), and was nouvelle cuisine at it’s best – great food, but just a little lacking in stodge and content, although Kevin A did manage to get a bowl of chips delivered for the table.  Della failed in fluttering her eyes to the young waiter to get us chocolates, although she did get cheese from the head waiter!  And so to Fred .... what a fantastic Captain, who managed to provide trophies, bottles, chocolate and goodies to all, and also topped up the wine quota on Sunday night, just to help the sore heads on the Monday.  What a star Captain, and we had to work hard to stop Kevin O’Donnell resigning in fear of matching a Captain’s event like nothing seen before.  Got the gist – great – make sure you don’t miss 2016.
