A cold and
windy day at Formby Ladies Golf Club greeted us for the much coveted Auberge
Claret Jug, sponsored by the Auberge Restaurant in Southport. Three new members joined us for the first
time, together with another who is ‘thinking about it’. The golf course was in pretty good condition
for the time of year, and the several dustings of hail certainly made it look
rather wintery on occasions. The
Captain’s prize consisted of ‘nearest the flag on the 18th in two’, and
Dave Gant was certainly very near, and walked off with the Whisky. Nearest the pin on the 12th was
tricky in the wind, but Chris Edwards managed to just get onto the green to
take the honours. Longest drive on the 8th
was also a challenge, straight into the wind and hail, but Captain Charles was
up to the challenge and smacked a monster of a drive down the fairway. A new name on the trophy in 2014: Kevin
Allars, with 35 points, followed by Fred Valentine on 33, just pipping Peter S
Watson on a count back on the last 6 holes.
The meal in the Auberge Restaurant was up to its very high standards,
and everyone had a great time with the noise level rising as the wine went
down. Our thanks again to the fantastic team
at the Auberge Restaurant for sponsoring the main prizes. So, that’s it for another year: well done
Captain Charles, Secretary Chris and Treasurer Peter: here’s to 2015 and ‘The
Year of the Fred!
