More wonderful warm
and calm September weather greeted golfers and partners at the De Vere Oulton
Hall complex in Leeds. It was great to see Bernie, Sue and Mary join the
golfers, and they all made the event extra special. The venue was a
success too - the course (3 x 9 holes) was forgiving and accessible, but also a
good test of golf. The course certainly generated an intense competition:
probably the best we've seen on our away trips.
After day one we had three 'elite' golfers hunting down the silverware (Fred,
Kevin O'Donnell and Steve), with three more having their own competition in the
'also rans' group. The 2-day competition all came down to the last green
on day 2, and we all watched on that final green as Steve took a one shot lead over
Fred onto that final hole: Fred then hit his tee shot into the bunker (maybe
advantage Steve?), but then Steve hit his shot into the trees, never to be seen
again (with the provisional shot sunk in 3 (so 5)). Fred then had a top notch up-and-down from the
bunker to nick the Captain's Trophy by a single point. Great stuff,
mulled over for some time in the bar.
Captain Charles most generously sponsored the event and, as usual, had a few
tricks up his sleeve with some innovative awards. Nobody left empty-handed;
and everybody had a really great time.
