Terrific turnout for the Captain’s Day June Trophy at Captain Fred’s
home course – Penwortham Golf Club. 19
golfers, including two other ‘locals’, for what proved to be a deceptively
tricky parkland course on a lovely sunny day.
The locals cleaned the floor with us, with Tom Brown (36 points) 1st,
Tom Kellet (35 points) 2nd and Tony Livesey (35 points) 4th. However, locals can’t win the VGS main
prizes, so instead they, and we, enjoyed some good company and banter, and Tom
Brown went away with a bottle of wine and a Captain’s memento. Paul Stanson carded a terrific 35 points, so
come in 3rd overall on countback, and best of the VGS rest to win
the trophy, .... and a bit more (see the photo)!

Paul will also be playing off a lot less than 25
next time, having managed his 35 points with 4 blobs!! Paul also won the Captains prize (best score
on the par 3s) with 13 points, and the longest drive on the 14th AND
had a two (a great day for Paul, who had offered a lift to the course to two
other members with the comment that he was sure that there would be room for
‘their’ trophy on the return journey – little did he know what was coming
later). Anyway, there were a few others
present, and 2nd overall, with 34 points, was Dave Gant, with John
Wilson 3rd on 32 points. Ian
Robinson won the nearest the pin on the 12th, and 2s were achieved
by Tom Brown, Stuart Sinclair (good to see him back with VGS), Paul Stanson and
Tom Kellet. Several other good scores
added to the ‘Race for the Hesvik’, and all rounded off by a sumptuous roast
beef dinner, and crumble and custard to follow.
A Yummy meal, a good day, and thanks especially to Captain Fred for
hosting the event and feeding up Bacon Butties on arrival.
