How lucky were we?  The day before the weather was 60mph winds and driving rain, and the day after 40mph winds again, but on our VGS final outing of the year to Formby Ladies Golf Club the weather was unseasonally bright, mild, calm, and the sun even came out for a few hours.  With Cumbria under water, and many golf courses closed up and down the country,

Formby Ladies GC was in magnificent condition.  As to the golf, there were several good scores (4 of over 40 points!), and the coveted Auberge Claret Jug, sponsored by the Auberge Restaurant in Southport, was retained for the first time in its history.  Captain Fred completed a tremendous run of Captain’s Challenges with ‘the most points scored on the 16th, 17th and 18th‘, and with Fred, himself, Kevin Allars and Dave Gibson all returning 7 points, the special prize was won by Dave on countback.  Fred also added a Christmas Challenge prize for nearest to the green on the short par 4 7th, which was won by some margin by Chris Edwards.  Nearest the pin on the 5th was won by Captain Fred, and he got his two as well, the only one of the day!  Longest drive on the 10th was won by Kevin Allars, just beating the drive of Dave Gibson.  As to ‘that trophy’, well Dave Gant beat Captain Fred to 3rd, with a countback on 40 points, Jon Wilson was 2nd on 42 points, and just pipping him to the retained trophy status was Kevin Allars on 43 points (handicap hammer time again for Kevin!).

The evening meal in the Auberge Restaurant was up to its very high standards, and the manageress handed out the trophy and a bottle of bubbly to Kevin, with wine for 2nd and 3rd.  Our thanks again to the team at the Auberge Restaurant for sponsoring the main prizes.

WILL BE REPLACED WHEN PHOTO COMES FROM STEVE
So, that’s 2015 finished, and Fred has certainly done us all very proud during the year, as have Secretary Chris and Treasurer Peter (even if he did forget the minor prizes in the evening).  So ‘bring it on’ Kevin O’Donnell – 2016 is just around the corner for Captain Kevin and his followers, and it all starts again with the Spring Pairs at Formby Ladies GC on Friday 18th March.
