Captain Alex Rugen’s VGS ‘Weekend’
Away was held at MacDonald Hill Valley Golf Complex near Whitchurch, and what
fantastic weather for September.
Day 1
was held on the lesser Sapphire course, with tons of trees, bumpy greens, water
and blind shots, but beautiful sunshine to make the afternoon very
enjoyable. Dave Gibson won the day on 32
points, closely followed by Kevin Allars (30 points) and Byron Williams (29
points), with Alex Rugen picking up the longest drive and Byron Williams the
nearest the pin prizes. Alex very
generously provided prizes and gifts for everyone.
The 10 golfers then joined
the three ladies of leisure for a few drinks, lots of stories of ‘nearly golf’
and plans for ‘spa experiences’, and a lovely meal together, before retiring to
rest tired limbs and heads! As you can
see, our terrific organiser Peter graciously ‘received’ his traditional folded
hat from Helen.
Day 2 was held on the
magnificent Championship Emerald course.
Oh yes – a real test of golf, trees, narrow and rolling fairways, and
another warm day, although not so sunny, with more blind shots, and water
hazards popping up everywhere. Captain ‘hit
it straight and long’ Alex won the day on 34 points, well ahead of the
field. Paul Stanson was second on 30 points,
with Kevin Allars and Peter S Watson tied for third on 28 points. Kevin Allars miraculously pipped Alex for the
longest drive and nobody managed to hit the difficult green for the nearest the
pin prize.

Alex won the overall
Captain’s Competition on 62 points, followed by Dave on 59 points and Kevin on
58 points. Peter Rothwell received his second
Turkey prize, and is now level with Kevin O’Donnell in the turkey league. Alex provided even more prizes, and explained
that this had been his highlight of the year (so far) as it provided his
opportunity to reward his friends and to enjoy the social side of VGS Golf alongside
his lovely wife, Helen.
