The season is upon us
again, and what a glorious day to be playing golf. Our Spring Challenge Trophy
event on 11th April was held at Beacon Park Golf Club, and fantastic
value it was too. Bacon butties and
coffee to start, curry and pud to finish, and oh, the little matter of 18 holes
of golf in the middle. The course
consisted of unforgiving rough, fast and unreadable greens, and made for those
with one leg longer than the other as most of the course was on the side of a
hill. However, defending champion Peter
S Watson mastered the conditions perfectly, and retained the trophy with a
score of 33 points, closely followed by Mark Starr on 31 points and Bob Whittle
on 29 points. Longest drive on the 13th
was won by the man who stood on the tee and declared that he was “only little,
never long, and not a candidate for longest drive”: Bob Whittle. Fred Valentine won nearest the pin on the tricky
3rd. Captain Charles graciously
donated four miniature whiskies to the person that got the best combined stableford
score on the 4 par 3s – and Bob Whittle won that too, with an impressive 10
points – plenty of golf balls and drinkies heading back to Bob’s house! It was great to see 3 guests (Bill Walker,
Graham Gorton and Peter Eccles) join us for the first time – from the
discussion afterwards, all clearly enjoyed their day and will hopefully be back
soon.
