Sadly only 8 golfers
competed for the Cochrane Trophy this year – a timely reminder that times are
hard, so the cost of the next event at Penwortham will be significantly
reduced. Bolton Golf Club was the venue
for the trophy, and a tricky one it was, with trees, hills, sloping fairways,
and hidden and tufty greens, not to mention working the coffee machine later! That said, the weather was fabulous until the
wind got up towards the end of our rounds – however, the rain only came down
once we were safely sitting enjoying a sumptuous roast pork meal in the
clubhouse. Only three players needed
holdalls for the trophies: Captain Fred Valentine won both the nearest the pin
on the 4th and the longest drive (just) on the 12th,
together with 2nd overall with 28 points. Chris Edwards was 3rd overall with
26 points, but also won the Captain’s challenge (best score on the 1st,
2nd, 17th and 18th) with 9 points. But our very worthy winner of the Cochrane
Trophy was Dave Gant with 33 points, having only missed 2 fairways all day,
having the opportunity to putt for 4 real birdies (all missed, unfortunately),
and putting like a demon: it was definitely his day, but maybe not Peter's.
