set different retentionPeriod in a Victoria Metrics cluster

I read the docs about Victoria Metrics, but I do not find answer to my questions.

I want to set different retentionPeriod in a Victoria Metrics cluster based on the amount of topic data.

What should I do?

What exactly is meant by "based on the amount of topic data"? How do you measure the amount and how would you expect VM to respect that?
