Barbie: Mariposa and Her Butterfly Fairy Friends, also known simply as Barbie: Mariposa, is the 12th Barbie movie. It was released on February 26, 2008, and it made its TV premiere on Nickelodeon on March 2, 2008.[1] The film is a spin-off of the Barbie: Fairytopia series, though not a direct sequel. Elina tells her puffball Bibble about a butterfly fairy named Mariposa. Mariposa goes on a quest to save Queen Marabella and free Flutterfield from the evil fairy Henna and the Skeezites.
"Join Barbie in an all-new world of Butterfly Fairies! Mariposa is a beautiful butterfly fairy who loves to read and dream about the world outside her home in the land of Flutterfield. Flutterfield is protected by the Queen's glimmering magical lights, but when the Queen is poisoned by the evil fairy Henna, the special lights begin to go out one by one. It's up to the brave Mariposa and her friends to journey beyond the safe borders of the city in search of a hidden antidote that will save the Queen. Join the butterfly fairy friends on an exciting adventure that will transform them forever!"
Henna, the evil butterfly fairy and the attendant of the queen of Flutterfield, has poisoned the queen in an attempt to take over the kingdom. Due to this, the lights protecting Flutterfield are in danger of going out. These lights protect Flutterfield from the "Skeezites", monsters who eat butterfly fairies and are connected to the life of Flutterfield's queen. It is up to Mariposa and her friends/employers, Rayna and Rayla, to find an antidote to save the queen.
They first travel according to the map, but when night falls, they are far from Flutterfield, and the Skeezites appear. They engage in a long chase scene, but Mariposa, Rayna, and Rayla escape through a gate of red plants. However, the map gets nibbled by a Skeezite. Mariposa remembers a sun picture on the map, and she concludes that they should travel east, as toward the rising sun.
They then arrive at the Bewildreness and encounter a little flying rabbit named Zinzie, a great thrower who loves fluttercorn, and leads them to a mermaid statue in exchange for a packet of fluttercorn. They end up all diving into a lake and find mermaids. Mariposa asks them to tell her the whereabouts of the Cave of Reflections, and the mermaids agree to help them, but they ask for one thing in exchange: Concho shells. However, little merbabies are sleeping and use these shells as pillows, and it is revealed that if you wake the baby, the baby cries and wakes a sea monster. Rayla finds a plant and wraps it until it bears the shape of the conch shells.
They gently swap the shells with the plant, but one of the babies is tickled on the nose by a little leaf that was not wrapped properly, and the baby wakes and starts crying. This wakes the other babies, who as well start crying, waking the sea monster. While Mariposa delivers the concho shells to the mermaids, Rayna, Zinzie, and Rayla try to escape the sea monster by swimming in different directions. The mermaids help in the end, and they all escape the sea monster.
Meanwhile, Queen Marabella fell ill, and the guards captured the prince, trying to find the antidote. The Queen's captain of the guards holds him in a conversation, and another fairy sought the prince and freed him. That fairy is Willa, Mariposa's best friend. She tells the prince that she has spotted Henna doing evil things. So they decide to follow her, and the two find out that she had taken control over Skeezites by mixing a strange liquid and thistleburst; moreover, they discover that Henna was plotting to take over Flutterfield all this time.
The mermaids tell the four braves where to find the Cave of Reflections, and they fly towards it eagerly but find that the cave was guarded by Skeezites. Zinzie manages to trick the Skeezites and the four escape into the cave. There, they find their reflections talking back to themselves. They finally meet the Fairy of the Cave, who leads the group to different sections, where she proclaims each time, "one of you must stay behind".
Mariposa was left as the last one, and the cave fairy guides her toward a place filled with stars. She tells that one star holds the antidote she needs. Mariposa eventually finds one (which was all by itself), in which she used the archer's star pattern to locate it. This hints that this was the correct star, and for that reason, Mariposa is presented with the lily flower antidote and larger, more beautiful sparkling wings.
The four heroines arrive back at Flutterfield just when the Skeezites start attacking everyone at the Royal fairy castle. Mariposa eventually discovers that Henna poisoned the queen, so she races to cure her with the antidote while Willa and the others fight the Skeezites outside with Thistleburst. Upon reaching the throne room, Henna steals the antidote and tries to stop Mariposa from foiling her plans, destroying the antidote and convincing her to rule alongside Flutterfield with her, but a pink Flutterpixie takes the antidote back and Mariposa refuses. She eventually manages to get the antidote to Marabella and heal her before she dies, but Henna steals it back and destroys it completely, causing the last light to go out.
All hope seems lost until the last light comes right back on and Marabella awakens, causing all the lights to reignite and shoo the Skeezites away. Henna leaves and goes away with the Skeezites under the pretense of not getting caught, thus fleeing from the light. After the big save, Queen Marabella presents each of the heroines with a crown of flowers. Since then, Mariposa felt she belonged, having learned that being herself is the best thing in life.
Barbie: Fairytopia is a 2005 animated fantasy film directed by Walter P. Martishius and William Lau and written by Elise Allen and Diane Duane.[4][5] The film premiered on Nickelodeon on March 6, 2005,[3] and was released on VHS and DVD two days later. It was distributed internationally through Universal Pictures Video and Entertainment Rights.[2]
The fifth installment in the Barbie film series and the first to have an original storyline not based on existing material, the film follows Elina, a wingless flower fairy who goes on a journey to save the enchanted land of Fairytopia from the evil fairy Laverna. The film is followed by two sequels; Barbie: Mermaidia and Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow and two spin-offs; Barbie: Mariposa and Barbie: Mariposa & the Fairy Princess.[6]
Barbie plays the role of Elina, a flower fairy who lives in Fairytopia with her puffball, Bibble. Unlike all other fairies, Elina does not have wings, for which she gets frequently ridiculed. Elina and her friend, Dandelion, learn that one of Fairytopia's guardians, Topaz, has supposedly been kidnapped. Elina returns to her flower home, Peony, in disbelief.
In truth, Topaz has been kidnapped by Laverna, the evil twin sister of Fairytopia's benevolent ruler, the Enchantress. Laverna reveals that she incapacitated her sister with poison, and plans to capture all seven of Fairytopia's guardians. Meanwhile, Laverna's minions spread her mist-like formula on Fairytopia, weakening all winged creatures. With no other options, the residents of Fairytopia turn to Laverna for a cure, and crown her queen.
In the morning, Elina and Bibble awaken to see Peony and the other fairies in the meadow sick from Laverna's formula. Elina, Dandelion and Bibble seek help from the closest guardian, Azura. On entering a forest, Dandelion inhales some of Laverna's formula, and is forced to return home when she is unable to fly.
After being turned away when they ask to see Azura, Elina and Bibble sneak to Azura's house, where she is discovered by Azura. Seeing a rainbow in Elina's eye, Azura invites them inside. She explains that the rainbow in Elina's eyes means that she is destined for great things. Elina, who does not believe in herself, disagrees. Azura tells her that all of Fairytopia is in trouble because of Laverna, and in the morning, she will leave to speak to a dryad named Dahlia, a former follower of Laverna; she asks Elina to take care of her magic necklace.
In the morning, as Azura is about to leave, she is kidnapped by a Fungus, one of Laverna's henchmen. Elina awakens and is accused of being responsible for Azura's disappearance, but gets rescued by Hue, a giant butterfly. In Laverna's lair, the Fungi arrive with Azura, but Laverna is angered when she finds her necklace missing. The Fungi tell Laverna that a wingless fairy had it. Realizing that a wingless fairy would be unaffected by her formula, Laverna orders the Fungi to find Elina.
Hue and Elina are pursued by Laverna's firebirds. They evade them when merman Prince Nalu gives them seaweed that allows them to breathe underwater. When the group finally reaches Dahlia's home, she is reluctant to help because the other guardians mistrust her. However, Elina convinces her to do the right thing. Dahlia tells Elina that Laverna has found a way to suck the powers from the fairy guardians' necklaces and transfer them to herself, stating that the "union point" would be its weakness.
Back in the Magic Meadow, the fairies and the flowers are cured. Elina and her friends are visited by the recovered Enchantress. She thanks Elina and her friends for saving everyone, and rewards her with her magic necklace. The necklace magically bestows Elina with her pair of wings. Overjoyed, Elina and her friends go flying together.
Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia, or simply Barbie: Mermaidia, is the first sequel to Barbie: Fairytopia and the 7th Barbie film.[9] It premiered on Nickelodeon on March 5, 2006, and was later released to VHS and DVD on March 14, 2006.[10][11] Lau and Martishius reprised their roles as directors. The plot involves Elina (Kelly Sheridan) who travels to Mermaidia to save her friend Nalu, the merman prince. Prince Nalu (Alessandro Juliani) has been kidnapped in an attempt to learn the whereabouts of a special berry that will make Laverna the most powerful fairy in Fairytopia. Elina finds herself needing the help of Nori (Chiara Zanni), a headstrong mermaid who does not trust outsiders and wants nothing to do with her. She also faces many challenges, including sacrificing her wings.
