While this smoke might be pesky, there are simple steps you can take to enjoy your go-to candle again. Here are a few tips and tricks to help maintain candles you already own and some helpful information when picking out your next purchase.
If your candle is producing a lot of black smoke, the length of your wick is likely the culprit. When the wick is too long, a candle will burn too quickly and an imbalance of heat and fuel will produce a larger flame with more smoke and soot.
Excessive smoke and soot can sometimes be a sign of a poor quality candle. Some candle companies go a bit overboard when adding fragrance oils which might make your candle smell great, but can cause it to burn irregularly in the long run.
This is when purchasing a quality candle comes in handy. You might be buying a candle for the aesthetic, scent, or maybe to help brighten a space. Whatever the case is, choosing a quality candle might ensure that it will produce less smoke. If you're not sure what to look for in a candle, start here.
We all know first impressions are important. Some hotels have space to spare in their lobbies, where designers have the opportunity to create beautiful environments without worrying about clutter or inefficiencies.
When it comes to meeting building codes for fire and safety, the enclosed elevator lobby has long been a popular choice. But what they provide in terms of safety can be overshadowed by their less-than-appealing aesthetic and price point.
Deployable smoke and fire containment curtains are used to effectively protect elevators during emergency situations. These curtains contain fire and smoke before they spread to larger areas of the building.
Smoke Guard offers hotel owners several options for elevator smoke and fire protection, without the need to enclose the entire elevator lobby. Not only does a Smoke Guard elevator curtain save hotel owners valuable square footage, but can save them money as well. Without the need for a large lobby, the area can be used for additional guest rooms or functional spaces.
Designers have found solutions for overcrowded front desk areas in the form of pods. Individual front desk pods a much more efficient use of lobby space. Instead of having one large, long front desk, having these separate (often mobile) pods helps free up space that would have otherwise been wasted.

Reybier has recently emerged as a luxury hotelier with a fast-growing portfolio of hotels in his La Réserva brand, which includes locations in Geneva (the first one), Paris, Zurich and southern France.
The lounge sits just off the main lobby, steps from the front desk, the lobby bar and the fine dining French eatery, with automatic frosted sliding glass doors hiding its interior. Inside are about half a dozen tables, each surrounded by dark brown, leather nailhead chairs and sofas, creating a clubby, masculine atmosphere complete with stocked bookshelves. There is a tall glass-fronted floor-to-ceiling display humidor containing the open box stock, plus a second larger glass storage unit that is half full cigar boxes and half wine racks.
Remember what I said earlier about the fact that there were no hotel staff members greeting guests as they walked in? Well, that cold vibe extended all the way through the check in process (unfortunately).
Rest well in this comfortable, accessible guestroom. In addition to the features below, this room includes an accessible smoke detector for the hearing impaired. The bathroom is equipped with rails. The roll-in shower features a handheld sprayer and built-in chair.
One update on The Wellesley. Until recently, you were able to smoke your own cigars there so long as you met the minimum spending requirement (25 per person). This has changed very recently and you now have to purchase and smoke their cigars. This is a shame given that it is an outside smoking area (in terms of the law) so no such restrictions are required. So instead I headed to the Ritz (a proper indoor smoking lounge) with friendlier and more knowledgeable stuff. The Ritz also does not charge for coffee and water. The Wellesley charges over 5 for a small black coffee. Cigar prices are comparable.
