Ordinary soap is made by combining fats or oils and an alkali, such as lye. The fats and oils, which may be from animal, vegetable, or mineral sources, are degraded into free fatty acids, which then combine with the alkali to form crude soap. The lye reacts with the oils, turning what starts out as liquid into blocks of soap. When made properly, no lye remains in the finished product. In the past, people commonly made their own soap using animal fats and lye that had been extracted from wood ashes.

Today there are very few true soaps on the market. Most body cleansers, both liquid and solid, are actually synthetic detergent products. Detergent cleansers are popular because they make suds easily in water and don't form gummy deposits. Some of these detergent products are actually marketed as "soap" but are not true soap according to the regulatory definition of the word.

If I plug it as an input into the last definition I posted above (livesoap_example_new2.gh) it works.
The ends are too far apart to form a catenoid, so it splits into 2 disks, but if you pull them together it can reconnect.

Hi Daniel, thanks for getting back. The collapsing tunnel was what I was wondering about and I understand how it is correctly resembling a real soap film. Is there another way to optimize towards CMC, with larger sizes, while preventing that tunnel from collapsing? Eventually achieving the same result, as if one would optimize the smaller scale version of your example and scale it up afterwards?

Remove hand soap pump and nozzle of pouch. Pour pouch liquid into the bottle until it is up to the neck of the bottle. Close refill pouch and reattach hand soap pump. Pump a few times, and your hand soap is ready!

We went to great lengths to make a hand soap with only the safest ingredients that don't undermine your health. Because fragrance chemicals can disrupt our hormones and wreak havoc on our health, we are committed to being fragrance-free always.

In true pioneer fashion, we consciously crafted a first-of-its-kind hand soap that combines luxury experience and human health. Utilizing high-quality ingredients not typically found in hand soaps, our hope is for more companies to follow suit, prioritizing human health and increasing safe ingredient consciousness.

What goes onto our skin goes into our bodies, so what goes into our soap is just as important as what's left out. We formulated our Hand Soap without the use of any harmful toxins. It's kind to sensitive skin as well as our microbiome, making it safe for the whole family.

To calculate the amount of lye, multiply 0.1388 times your weight of fat. I had 710 g of fat, so would need 99 g of lye to completely convert the fat to soap. But I always superfat my soap; adding a bit less lye to a) ensure the lye is used up, b) make the soap more moisturizing. So I went with 85 g of lye. I dissolved this lye in twice as much water (170 g).

Soap Step 7: When soap is firm, cut into bars
Check the soap periodically over the next day. Cut it when it is the consistency of hard fudge. Overnight is usually as long as you want to wait.

Soap Step 8: Wait 2-6 weeks for your soap to cure before using it
Although the physical changes are rapid (soap is firm within a few days), the chemical process of saponification is more slow. Right now the soap is still very basic (high pH) and will burn your skin if you use it. This is because there is still lye in the soap. It will take several weeks before the lye has completely broken down the fatty acids into soap molecules. At this point, the lye will be completely used up and the soap will be composed of soap molecules, glycerin, and some residual fats. Soap can be ready after 2 weeks, but 4-6 weeks is a safer period.

I think you just convinced me to buy organic soap from my Amish friends in Holmes country ohio. They make there own soap and sell it tooe cheap. They have flecks of rosemary and lavender in it and make it after they slaughter and render their beef and pig. Of course they have four women and their daughters (ten of them) to help and they make enough for a year or more for each family. My hats off to those that do this as routine as I cook eggs!

We own a restaurant so thought i would try to use bacon grease in my next batch of soap as it would decrease soap cost. I boiled the grease in water twice and it was very clean. I found the lard to contain some water that adhered when scooped off the water wash. I thought i could place in stainless deep pot on very low fire and have the water boil off. SO WRONG. I got a big blowout with melted lard on everything in my kitchen. Any suggestions on how to get all water out of washed lard.

Dear Soapmakers,
Regarding the Lye/Soap Calculator, we would like to invite you to try our Soap Calculator on our web-site.
the 1 Soap Calculator able to calculate also the % of Glycerin inside your soap !
We published our updated new Soap Calculator here: -calculator-handmade-soap.html
Good Soap !

The stick is safe on most fabrics, including lights, darks, colors, cotton, linen, wool, silk, and synthetics. An exception is pigment-dyed fabrics, which essentially stain fabric with a color that can be easily removed by the soap. Always defer to the care instructions on the product tag. We recommend testing any new or delicate fabrics and surfaces in an inconspicuous area before cleaning fully.

The Soap Stick is also effective for hand-washing clothes, making it an excellent travelling companion. Just fill a bucket or sink with warm water. Submerge your dirty clothes in the water and rub them with the stick, focusing on any dirty or sweaty areas that need extra attention. The water should get sudsy from the soap. Let the clothes soak for a bit, then remove and rinse them thoroughly. Let clothes air dry.

Glycerin is chemically a type of alcohol and is naturally created when the oil is converted into soap. We do not add any additional glycerin to our soap. 100% of the glycerin present is a byproduct of the soapmaking process and is vegan and cruelty-free.

Organic Cocos Nucifera, or organic coconut oil, is left in the soap after conversion to sodium cocoate. This is because we use sodium hydroxide, or lye, in the conversion process, and leaving excess oil ensures there is no remaining lye in the finished product. Our coconut soap has only a very small amount of excess oil, so it is designed to get tough jobs done without leaving oil behind on your clothes or in your washer.

Water is used in the soapmaking process to dissolve the lye and help evenly mix the oils and lye together for a complete saponification reaction. After saponification is complete, the water evaporates. There is only about 5% water in the finished soap, making it more shelf stable than a liquid soap that would require a preservative due to the high percentage (about 60%) of water.

Our eco-friendly stain remover stick is concentrated and packaged to minimize waste and environmental impact. By making a concentrated solid soap stick, we eliminate the need for added preservatives or single-use plastic bottles.

So far, I really like this stain remover. I just keep a spray bottle of water above my washer and dryer and when I have clothing with stains - I spray it with water and then rub the soap stick on it. So, far it works great! It didn't work on stains on my tea towel but I may have washed and dried it before using the stain stick. ;) I couldn't remember.
