Just as private landlords didn't want their tenants to apply for the provincial rent subsidy being offered to help with rents (BC-TRS) because they had not been declaring the income at tax return time, now we see commercial landlords doing the same thing.

But BC's NDP government has played another high card to thwart 'reluctant' landlords.

B.C. bans commercial landlords from evicting tenants without applying for federal rent relief

BREAKING: B.C. Finance Minister Carole James says landlords who choose not to apply for Canada's emergency commercial rent relief program will not be able to evict businesses that aren't able to pay rent.

James said the emergency order is meant to protect small businesses and to encourage landlords to apply for the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance, which aims to reduce rent owed by small business tenants by 75 per cent for April, May and June.

The order restricts evictions, rent-repayment lawsuits, and repossession of goods and properties by small businesses, and will stay in place until the end of June, when the federal relief program is set to end.
