"BBC secures Wimbledon rights until 2033

The BBC has secured a new long-term agreement with the All England Lawn Tennis Club that will keep Wimbledon free-to-air in the UK until at least 2033.

The extension continues one of the longest-running partnerships in broadcasting. The BBC first televised The Championships in 1927 and will continue to provide comprehensive live coverage across BBC One, BBC Two, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds, the BBC Sport website and app, as well as its social media platforms.

The renewed deal comes as BBC Sport prepares to introduce a refreshed editorial approach for this year’s tournament, including new presenters and contributors, enhanced analysis, expanded storytelling and greater use of technology across television, radio, online and social media.

There had been concern within the All England Lawn Tennis Club that coverage had become dated when compared with other tournaments such as Roland Garros and the US Open.

The announcement follows record digital audiences for Wimbledon on BBC platforms. Last year’s Championships generated 69.3 million requests across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and the BBC Sport app, surpassing the previous record of 54.3 million set in 2023 and well ahead of the 50.1 million recorded in 2024.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, said the agreement would allow the broadcaster to continue evolving its coverage while keeping the tournament freely available to UK audiences.

“Wimbledon holds a truly special place in the hearts of audiences across the UK and this new agreement means we can continue our longstanding and deeply valued partnership with the All England Club well into the next decade,” he said. “With new technology, fresh storytelling, new voices and innovative ways to connect with fans across television, radio, online and social media, we are excited to build the future of Wimbledon coverage together.”

Deborah Jevans, Chair of the All England Club, said the renewed agreement reflected a shared commitment to maintaining free access to the Championships.

“We are delighted to extend our historic partnership with the BBC through to 2033. For nearly a century, we have worked together to bring the magic of Wimbledon to generations of fans in the UK,” she said. “This agreement reflects our absolute commitment to ensuring Wimbledon remains freely available to the widest possible audience across the nation.”"
