Virgin Media Television has announced that Shane Coleman will become the permanent host of the station's current affairs programme The Tonight Show following the departure of former presenter Kieran Cuddihy.
Journalist and broadcaster Shane Coleman will continue to present The Hard Shoulder on Newstalk.
He has been fronting Virgin Media’s flagship current affairs programme since February after Kieran Cuddihy left to become the new host of Liveline on RTÉ Radio 1.
A graduate of economics and politics in Trinity College with a MA in journalism from Dublin City University, he previously worked as a political correspondent for now defunct newspaper The Sunday Tribune.
He has also published four books on Irish politics.
Commenting on his new position, he said:
"I’ve really enjoyed hosting The Tonight Show over the past while, so I’m delighted to be taking it on full-time.
"It’s a hugely important space for discussion and debate, and it plays a big role in how we talk about the issues that matter. I’m looking forward to building on that and continuing to bring viewers a programme that feels engaging, relevant and in tune with what’s happening across the country."
Ruairi Carroll, Head of News at Virgin Media Television, said:
"Shane has a deep understanding of current affairs and has already made a significant impact during his time as guest presenter of The Tonight Show.
His appointment reflects our commitment to public service journalism - ensuring our audiences are informed, challenged and engaged through balanced, rigorous and independent coverage."
The Tonight Show airs on Virgin Media PLAY and Virgin Media One every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10pm.
