Stan Collymore has quit Twitter following a row over abusive messages.

The former footballer and talkSPORT pundit's account was taken offline on Thursday morning (January 23), following a front page story in The Sun from ex-girlfriend Ulrika Jonsson.

Yesterday, Collymore hit out at Twitter for not acting strongly enough against users who send racist, sexist or threatening messages.

He also accused Twitter of having poor age verification techniques, and "hiding behind" statements that it is unable to comment on individual cases.

talkSPORT later announced that it was banning all mentions on Twitter due to its failure to respond to abuse directed at Collymore.

Ulrika Jonsson has since spoken out against her former partner, accusing him of being a "vile hypocrite" for speaking out about abuse, following their turbulent relationship in the late 1990s.

Staffordshire Police and Dungannon Police have confirmed that they are investigating tweets sent to Collymore.

Thanks for that, Sca!

I follow/followed Collymore on Twitter. He did, indeed, get a number of abusive messages over the past number of months, which he occasionally adverted to in his tweets/retweets. Maybe now, he will have more spare time in which to learn Irish, which he has from time to time contemplated doing. (He even sent a few tweets _as Gaeilge_! Fancy irish being spoken with a broad, 'brummie' blas!) He'll  be missed.

Flor was trying to think of the Irish guy on 5live who used or maybe still does TV3 soccer, is it Conor McNamara?
Heard him last weekend but didn't catch his name.

Although, not sure if he still does TV3 soccer. He'd be one of the football reporters and backup commentators on BBC radio. no doubt, he'll feature in their World Cup coverage this year.
