There are things you can do to extend the life of your iPhone battery.
Stephen Beacham/CNET
If your iPhone is always dying, it could be time to make some changes to the way you use your phone. Maybe you need to charge it differently, with the appropriate cables or invest in a decent power bank that allows you to charge your iPhone from anywhere. You could also turn on Low Power Mode permanently.
There are many ways to preserve your iPhone's battery, many of which are simple to do, like throwing your phone into airplane mode or turning it off completely. However, not all battery saving tips are obvious, and if you're running iOS 16, there are a few new ways that help your iPhone keep its battery charge for longer.
In this story, we'll cover two new features and settings to iOS 16, both of which consume your iPhone's battery in varying degrees, and how you can turn them off to preserve battery life. Here's what you need to know.
And if you want some more battery savings tips and tricks, check out how to stop background apps from refreshing and how to replace your iPhone's battery (cheaper than Apple).
Remove widgets from your lock screen
All the widgets on your lock screen force your apps to automatically run in the background, constantly fetching data to update the information the widgets display, like sport's scores or the weather. And because these apps are constantly running in the background due to your widgets, that means they continuously drain battery.
If you want to help preserve some battery on iOS 16, the best thing to do is simply avoid widgets on your lock screen (and home screen). The easiest way to do this is to switch to another lock screen profile -- press your finger down on your existing lock screen and then swipe around to choose one that doesn't have any widgets.
However, if you want to just remove the widgets from your existing lock screen, press down on your lock screen, hit Customize, choose the Lock Screen option, tap on the widget box and then hit the "—" button on each widget to remove them.
If you're already low on battery, it's best to just switch to a wallpaper that doesn't have lock screen widgets.

Keep haptic keyboard feedback turned off
Surprisingly, the keyboard on the iPhone has never had the ability to vibrate as you type, an addition that was recently made on iOS 16, known as haptic feedback. Instead of just hearing click-clack sounds, haptic feedback gives each key a vibration, providing a more immersive experience as you type. However, according to Apple, the very same feature may also affect battery life.
According to this Apple support page about the keyboard, haptic feedback "might affect the battery life of your iPhone." No specifics are given as to how much battery life the keyboard feature does drain, but if you want to conserve battery, it's best to keep this feature disabled.
Fortunately, it is not on by default. If you've enabled it in yourself, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback and toggle off Haptic to turn off haptic feedback for your keyboard.
Every single time you type, you'll feel a slight vibration for each key you hit.

And although they haven't been released yet, Live Activities and the iCloud Shared Photo Library are two iOS 16 features that may also drain your battery, so look out for an update to this story on how to disable them.

It's easy to get rid of the new Search button on the iOS 16 home screen.

This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET's collection of news, tips and advice around Apple's most popular product.
Overall, the new features and settings that iOS 16 brings to the iPhone are very welcome. It's great to finally be able to unsend text messages or get haptic feedback whenever you type in the keyboard -- but there's one feature that you might not be so fond of.
Many people are unhappy with the addition of the Search button to the bottom of the home screen, right above your dock. While the Search feature on iOS is useful for quickly finding text messages, files and settings, the new button is placed in a location where it's easy to accidentally tap, especially when you're scrolling through your various home screen pages.
And when you do inadvertently hit the new Search button, the Search feature blows up in full screen. Then you have to swipe out of it to go back to your home screen, which can get annoying.

I'll explain the easy fix to get rid of the new Search button on your home screen. And if you want to learn more about iOS 16, check out how to view all your saved Wi-Fi passwords and customize your lock screen with widgets.
How to get rid of the new Search button on iOS 16
On your iPhone running iOS 16, launch the Settings application, go to Home Screen and toggle off the Show on Home Screen button underneath "Search." Instead of the Search button on your home screen, you'll now see several dots indicating your various home screen pages instead. If you press on it, nothing happens.
Easily remove the Search button in Settings.

If you want to access the Search feature after removing the home-screen button, you can access it the traditional way: swipe down from anywhere on your screen.

The Mail app gives you a few seconds to unsend an email.
Nelson Aguilar/CNET
You've just sent an email, but unfortunately you've made a mistake. Maybe you sent it to the wrong person, forgot to add an attachment or made a grammatical error. Whatever the reason, you definitely want the email back in your inbox so that you can fix it.
If you're running iOS 16, you can now unsend an email on your iPhone. The feature, which only works with the built-in Mail app, gives you a limited amount of time to recall a sent message, whether it's through iCloud, Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo.
If you want to learn how to unsend an email on your iPhone, here's everything you need to know.
Want to know more about iOS 16? Check out all the best new features on iOS 16, as well as these 7 hidden iOS 16 features we were surprised to find.
Before you try to unsend an email
For this feature to work, you must use the Mail app for sending and receiving emails. Unlike third-party standalone email apps, like Gmail, Apple's built-in Mail app allows you to manage all your email accounts from a single place, including:
iCloud
Microsoft Exchange
Google
Yahoo!
AOL
Outlook
If you want to add your existing email account to Mail, open the Settings application and go to Mail > Accounts. Here you can add your account, which will then appear in the Mail app.
How to unsend an email on iOS 16
In the Mail app, go to the inbox of your chosen account (tap Mailbox to view all) and then create a new email. Draft your email as usual -- adding a recipient email address, subject, body and any attachments -- and then hit the blue button on the top-right to send your email.
Once you do, you should be sent back to your inbox. At the bottom of the page, you'll see the words Undo Send in blue. By default, you only have 10 seconds to hit this button to unsend your recently sent email, or else it will irretrievably send and you won't be able to get it back.
If you hit Undo Send, you'll be taken back to your email, where you can fix any mistakes or add any missing attachments, and then send it again. You'll have 10 seconds to undo the email if there is another error, just as before.
As long as you're in the Mail app, you can unsend emails sent via Gmail, Yahoo and more.

How to get more time to unsend an email on your iPhone
The way the unsend feature works is that instead of actually sending the email and then getting it back, you simply have a buffer period between when you hit the send button and the email is actually sent. As mentioned above, the default time is 10 seconds, but you can go into your settings to increase this buffer.
In the Settings app, go to Mail > Undo Send Delay and then choose either delay time:
Off
10 seconds (default)
20 seconds
30 seconds
If you choose the Off option, you won't be able to use the unsend feature in the Mail app.
You have up to 30 seconds to unsend an email, but not by default.
