Equestrian

It is the 150th year of the Dublin Horse Show, not only Ireland’s largest equestrian meeting, but one of the biggest annual events held on the island. There are five days of competition, with live tv coverage on the final three days, including for the Nations Cup (the Aga Khan Trophy). - Friday-Sunday, RTÉ

Camogie

Cork appear to be on an unstoppable march to a third All-Ireland senior title in a row. Though, as Cork players know, hot favourites don’t always prevail on All-Ireland final day. Standing in their way on Sunday at Croke Park will be Galway, a team the Munster side defeated in last year’s decider. - Sunday, RTÉ

Soccer

The opening bell of the 2025/26 English football season will be rung at the weekend when Premier League champions Liverpool take on FA Cup winners Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium in the Community Shield. While it will be the 103rd staging of the annual event, amazingly, it will be the first time Palace are involved. - Sunday, TNT Sports

Soccer

Drogheda United defeated Derry City, 2-0, in the 2024 FAI Cup Final in front of close to 40,000 spectators at the Aviva Stadium. This year, the two clubs meet in the third round of the competition, this time at the Brandywell. The FAI Cup takes on even greater significance this year as the champions go into the Europa League qualifiers. – Saturday, RTÉ

Rugby

Formerly known as the Tri Nations Series, the Rugby Championship begins at the weekend. First up, defending champions South Africa host Australia at Johannesburg, while Argentina meet New Zealand in Córdoba. There are six rounds to the tournament, with the final round featuring Argentina and South Africa playing at London’s Twickenham Stadium. - Saturday, Sky Sports

UFC

Dricus du Plessis faces surely the toughest test of his UFC middleweight title reign at the weekend against Khamzat Chimaev. Athletics

Two important events on the IAAF Diamond League calendar will take place this week, with Athletissima in Lausanne, Switzerland on Wednesday, and AG Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, Belgium on Friday. Both events will feature many medallists from the 2024 Olympic Games. - BBC & Virgin Media, Aug 20th & 22nd

Rugby

The 10th edition of the Women’s Rugby World Cup will be hosted by tournament favourites England. The opening game is between the home side and the United States in Sunderland on Friday, with the final at Twickenham Stadium at the end of September. Cycling

The 80th edition of Vuelta a España will move between Italy, France, Andorra and Spain over the next three weeks. The third event of the 2025 season of the big three (the other two being Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France) will begin in Turin. Jannik Sinner is the defending men’s singles US Open champion, with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic likely to be the main challengers. The 2025-26 Women’s Super League begins again in England this week. The first game features reigning champions Chelsea hosting Manchester City. Athletics

The 2025 World Athletics Championships will take place in Tokyo from Saturday, September 13th to Sunday, September 21st. Boxing

The first all-Irish world title fight will take place at Belfast’s Windsor Park on Saturday night, when local fighter Lewis Crocker takes on Limerick’s Paddy Donovan. In a controversial first bout, Donovan was disqualified in the eighth round for punching Crocker after the bell.
