RDT A new Bridge School for Irula Children Periar Nagar - A Glance: Periar Nagar is a remote village which is 58 kilometers away from Chennai. It is in Manampathy panchayat, Thiruporur union in kanchipuramdistrcit. There are 72 tribal families who live for years. All the houses in the village are very old and people could not say exactly when they were constructed. Men are working as wood cutters and hunters. Many are working in rice mills and brick kilns for daily wage. They all are coming under the category of unorganized sectors. Government has offered Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Scheme (MGNREGS) work for 100 days and for that they have not obtained the MGNREGS card from the government. There is a school in Manampathy and it is 3 kilometers away from their village. As they go to the school, they are mocked at and they are beaten by the other community students. These people are voiceless and they immediately take action of not sending the children to the school. Now more than 25 children are at home and while away their time. Sometimes their children are involved in grazing the cattles of other community people. Child labor in the village Child labor is prevalent in the village and the younger children follow the foot steps of the senior students in the village. They are inaccessible to all the basic needs. Parents too do not pay attention to their children’s education. They take the children with them since there is no facility to leave the children in a safe place. Attempts by RDT Rural Development Trust has entered in to this village 3 months ago and found that providing education is inevitable and the same is to be provided without any delay. Mr.S.R.Mohan, the staff of RDT visited the house holds and conducted meetings in the village and got the approval of starting bridge course center for the drop out children. RDT contacted government officials on this regard and finally it was determined to start the center immediately.
Opening Ceremony of the new School As it was decided, the day came on 13th July 2012. All the government officials like Mr.John Alphonse, Assistant Educational Officer, Mrs.Jeyanthi,Headmistress of Panchayat union middle school, Mr.Rajasekaran, Supervisor of SSA, Mrs.Anuradha and Mr.velayutham BRTEs of SSA, Mr.Srinivasan representative of Panchayat President, Mr.S.R.mohan, RDT Staff Mr.Franklin Secretary of unroiganized workers’ federation, , and Mr.T.K.Elumalai, Managing Trustee were there to grace the function. Miss.Yasodai, the new teacher was introduced to the children. There were 20 children and 30 parents for the function. All the officials welcomed the people and advised to leave the children to the school which is in the center of the village. The Panchayt president was too good to provide the community hall for conducting the center in the village. It was informed that this Center will work from 9.30 A.M to 4.30 P.M every day. It is merely an added experience for RDT to enetr into a tribal village for the good cause. It was astonishing to note that no parents felt bad of not sending the children to school so far. This occasion has opened a new door for the tribal community in Periar Nagar. They could express their gratitude for starting the school having understood their long run expectation. All the children were given school Bag, note books, Slate, Pen, Pencils and uniforms. They were happy to receive them all in front of higher officials.
Future Plans ahead…… The organization has to provide some awareness training in order to eradicate some evils like uncontrolled population, iliteracy, alcoholism and unawareness. Some families have more number of children. They need to be informed of family planning, Mrs.Gomala aged 35 has 7 children and now she is pregnant. She also told that one child has already died early. She told that her daughter had already got married. As she was asked of family planning, she told that she would get bad effects after the surgery. Like her there are some women who have more children and have to be convinced of birth control. It is also another dream that soon the government will construct a building for the vulnerable children in the village. It is very shocking that more number of drop outs in tamilnadu is found in tribal community. The new step that has been taken will go as a milestone and the people of Periar Nagar will see their children are regular in attending school. The present intervention will reduce the rate of drop outs in Periar Nagar. Peoople will be empowered to get all the benfits through the inetrvention of RDT. There are number of tribal villages like Periar nagar. More drop outs are found in other villages too. RDT has taken this challenge and more initiatives are on move towards other tribal villages in the district in eradicating this illiteracy. RURAL DEVELOPMENT TRUST Mr. T. K. Elumalai, Managing Trustee, |
