Bhakialakshmi, 21 hails from one of the most marginalized communities of Kanchipuram District in state Tamilnadu and was pursuing higher education with limited resources and support. Her dreams came crashing down when she realized that she had failed in two subjects (Tamil and English) in her final examination and gave up her on her studies when she received no support from anyone to help her cope up with the failure.
Her life began to change when mentors from SEA (Society for Education and Action) and Vibha explained about their Non Residential Bridge Course (NRBC) program that provides supplementary education for children in the areas of higher school drop-outs with limited socio-economic conditions. With special coaching and constant encouragement from the teachers at the Bridge Course, Bhakialakshmi was able to pass in these two subjects and was able to pursue higher education and went on to become a Nurse in a private hospital Madhurandhagam village currently earning Rs. 11,500 per month.
SEA is a community-based organization that works with children of fisherman and saltpan workers. Vibha has partnered with SEA since 2005, supports 6 motivation centers, bridge courses and 5 Parents Teachers Association Teachers and has empowered over 7500 children and youth of fisherman community in the past 12 years.
