At least, that's what it did to me. I hopped into a DMZ match specifically to see how bad the jumpscares are and still managed to get got by a random box I opened to finish a contract. They're not even sophisticated jumpscares either, just run-of-the-mill ghostly faces with super loud screams that early YouTubers used to edit into innocuous videos of cars driving through the countryside. Simple, but effective.

Potentially irritating, too. There's a random chance that every loot box you open will come with a scare, and unfortunately, opening boxes is a thing you do constantly. I think most players will take them in good fun, but I understand why some are already asking for options to tone them down or turn them off.

The most impressive part to me is that all the Haunting stuff (the souls, boss fights, challenges, etc) is available in both DMZ and Battle Royale. Activision has done a remarkably good job of supporting both modes while keeping them distinct. With all the permanent upgrade paths that were added since the last time I played, DMZ has become a pretty cool little Tarkov-lite extraction shooter. It also serves as a way to experience PvE-focused events like The Haunting without the constant threat of real players.

The EP that you earn tracks toward individual rewards and will be added to the total community EP score to unlock Day Zero zones. A zone is cleared once players have collectively accumulated the required Community EP displayed in-game.

Event Points are earned by playing any mode and completing Event Actions in a contested zone. The amount of EP earned varies based on the action completed. Event Actions that reward Event Points include:

Day Zero Supply Drop: Earn Event Points more quickly by acquiring items and gear from a special Day Zero Supply Drop, awarding better loot, cash, XP, and EP compared to opening a traditional Supply Box. Day Zero Supply Drops are periodically dropped into active zones and show up on the radar as a crate icon.

When the event begins, the first zone will activate. Complete the above actions when inside an active zone to earn Event Points. As the event goes on, the next zone will activate as the community EP milestones are reached.

Operation: Day Zero features both community and individual rewards. All players will have the opportunity to claim the earned community rewards at the end of the event. Individual rewards are given based on the total number of Event Points that you specifically contribute to the greater community total.

1. Contract complete. Completing contracts rewards a large amount of EP, so try to complete as many as you can in a match to maximize your earnings. They often lead to opportunities to engage enemy players as well, further increasing your EP gain upon eliminating the threat.

Call of Duty: Warzone celebrates one year of existence as of March 10, and many of the game's diehard fans were expecting a special celebration in the form of a nuclear event. Even though nothing spectacular has happened yet in-game as of Wednesday afternoon, official teases and unofficial leaks suggest something may be in the works in the near future.

Starting with the official content first, a popular Call of Duty content creator recently shared pictures of a package he allegedly received from Activision. The parcel features a yellow prison-like sweatsuit with the words "captured" written on it. The pants also sport a cool V-shaped emblem, presumably in honor of the iconic Verdansk map. As seen in the pictures above, the clothes arrive alongside a typed note that reads as follows:

It's that last line that's perhaps most telling, as it implies some type of "ghoul" could be making its way to Verdansk in the coming days. This message and more is buttressed by a short teaser video posted by the Call of Duty Twitter account on March 5, which announces "zombies had been sighted exiting the Warzone Shipwreck." To date players haven't seen any undead action inside the main Verdansk island, but it's clear there's something spooky afoot.

Teases like these set the stage on an official basis, but alleged leaks courtesy of Call of Duty dataminer Zesty potentially paint a more complete picture. After poring through dozens of audio files in a now-removed clip, many fans have reached the conclusion that a lobby called Plague is on the way, and it sounds like it's very much tied to the fabled nuke event. The dialogue lines contain phrases like "this is the end" and "this is our final broadcast" in reference to defending Verdansk from a zombie threat. But, perhaps most critically, the files have voice lines that say "nuke inbound for Verdansk."

Based on the descriptions offered within these lines, the prevailing theory amongst fans is that the so-called nuke event will involve zombies laying siege to Verdansk. Players will be told at the start of the mission that they'll be evacuated once the threat has been dealt with, but failure to do so will result in a nuclear fate. Given that Verdansk seems destined to be destroyed in some capacity to make way for a new Warzone map, failure will likely be the end result. Squads will have lots of fun trying to push back hordes of undead enemies, but those efforts will presumably be in vain.

Nukes had been an integral part of the Warzone storyline in the months leading up to the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War this past fall, but the topic had been mostly forgotten until fairly recently. Following the launch of Black Ops Cold War Season 2 in late February, Video Games Chronicle reported that Verdansk would fall to a nuclear weapon to usher in a new map. This led some to assume Warzone's one-year anniversary would be the perfect time to relaunch the popular battle royale, but it appears that reality won't come to pass. Still, there's lots of evidence to suggest there's something in the works to be uncovered very soon.

The Warhammer 40,000: For the Emperor event is live in Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone, running from now until March 27. This crossover event lets you earn Space Marine-themed calling cards, emblems, and even the Righteous Storm weapon blueprint. Here we highlight all the rewards and unlock requirements.

Activision has already stated that Call of Duty: Warzone will shift its setting away from the Cold War and towards World War 2 when the new game, Vanguard, releases. What we haven't gotten is many official details on what this transition could look like.

Thanks to a number of data miners and leakers, however, we are starting to get a better understanding of what to expect. Namely, there appears to be an event called "Visions of Verdansk" that will help sunset the old setting and bring in the new one.

While it would be great for Visions of Verdansk to start when Call of Duty: Vanguard releases, that probably won't be the case. As of now, it's set to release on November 18, and will be active throughout the end of November until Caldera (Warzone's Pacific Map) releases on December 2/3.

The first leaked details for Visions of Verdansk point towards it acting as a send off of sorts for the Verdansk map. According to data miner Alaix COD, there will be an event or game mode called Operation: Flashback. Taglines from the data offer some rudimentary clues as to what Operation: Flashback will look like:

Contracts and Supply Boxes will most likely have a larger pool of offered activities and loot for players. The limits that different seasons impose on supply boxes will probably be dropped, allowing players to receive guns from across seasons. Older keycards will probably allow players to access blueprints and other goodies they may have missed throughout Verdansk's run.

All in all, the event seems like a combination of a send off for the original map as well as a last-call for players to earn any rewards they can't live without. But, if some leakers are to be believed, that's only half of it.

"Let the festivities begin early with the upcoming CODMAS event!" the official blog post reads. "This year, the Halloween spirit has bled over into the winter holidays with the appearance of Santa Gnaws, here to spread horror and fear to the Operators of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Warzone."

First up is Santa's Slayground, an in-game event which requires players to complete eight challenges to earn rewards like consumable items and cosmetics, including the 'Christmas Skulls' Calling Card and 'Elfsecution' Finishing Move.
