Dysfunctional families provide rich material for cinematic narratives. The lives of the bickering Batras are no different but they do it with the remarkable restraint of upper-class Delhi. There are no overtly dramatic flourishes, just life as it is. As their Gulmohar villa is being brought down to give way to a high rise, the family meets up for one last party before the packers and movers take over. However, over the course of ghazal and gossip, the discordant notes in their relationships get exposed and one gets sucked into their tumultuous present and turbulent past. The postcards of memories are riddled with cryptic messages on the destiny that director and co-writer Rahul V Chittella pass on to us.
Chittella has assisted Mira Nair in the past and one could sense the vibe of Monsoon Wedding in Gulmohar. Here instead of an impending wedding, the fractures in the family are exposed when the Batras decide to shift from their family residence to a new abode. The house shift becomes an opportunity to clear the cobwebs in the relationships. Beyond the main strand, Chittella and co-writer Arpita Mukherjee reflect on the changes in the social strata that serve the affluent class and hint at the role of ideological shifts in the response to family politics. In Kusum, the head of the family, her son Arun, and brother-in-law Sudhakar, we could see three world views, and the fourth one, in the form of her grandson Aditya, is a work in progress.
It is good to see the seasoned Sharmila Tagore return to the screen after almost a decade and effortlessly charm her way through an eclectic ensemble cast in a role that is tailor-made for her. As the progressive matriarch Kusum, she is neither wilted by the past nor held back by conservative tradition. The dimples are intact and so is the grace. More importantly, her performance has not become dated.
Loid is a super spy, Yor is a loveable assassin, and their adopted daughter Anya is an even more loveable telepath. Together, they form the perfect spy family, and lean on each other's abilities to get the job done.
The first episode of Spy x Family season 2, Follow Mama and Papa, premiered on Saturday 7th October 2023, airing in Japan at 11pm and landing on Crunchyroll internationally soon after.
Episodes will continue to air every Saturday, with each landing on Crunchyroll for international audiences soon after, and based on the information from the home media release, it appears we'll be getting Spy x Family season 2 in chunks.
With Missions 26 - 29 debuting on home entertainment on 20th December 2023, Missions 30 - 33 21st February 2024 and Missions 34 - 37 17th April 2024, it looks like we'll be spacing out our time with the family.

It's been over a year since Peaky Blinders came to an end with its sixth season. The acclaimed BBC series began in 2013, and neither its creator Steven Knight nor the cast or the network itself imagined that it would be as big a phenomenon as it ended up becoming.
Despite the fact that the main story came to a conclusion in 2022, before the premiere of the last season Knight confirmed that he was going to continue showing more of the life of Cillian Murphy's Tom Shelby in a film that is already in development, although at the moment does not have a release date.
Peaky Blinders is set in Birmingham, England in the 1920s and follows the Shelby family, a group of criminals who rule the streets. It all starts with the return of Thomas, who returns after having faced the French in the war to put himself in charge of the family business once again.
For six seasons, Knight portrayed Shelby as a ruthless man and a full-blown criminal. However, the producer has always said that he would like to redeem the character and end his story as a different man.
An alternative would be to follow the story of Finn Shelby, Harry Kirton's character, who broke away from the family but vowed to return for revenge. Isiah would also be a great candidate to star in the future of the franchise. Played by Daryl McCormack in the last few installments, he was one of the leaders of the Peaky Blinders in the streets with Thomas staying away from the action and moving in the shadows.
