fog is challenging to simulate, in particular if you do not only want to account for attenuation of direct light and want to get quantitatively meaningful results.
Radiance, which forms the basis of the light simulation in the vi-suite, provides the "mist" participating media model. The book "Rendering with Radiance" provides the details of the implementation, but a brief explanation of its parameters can be found in an archived mail by Carsten Bauer: https://www.radiance-online.org/pipermail/radiance-general/2005-July/002827.html
As far as I know, mist is not implemented in the vi-suite though. So if you know the parameters and need it in your model, you would probably have to add the scene description to the exported Radiance model.
