Hi,

Still untangle doesn't have proper gateway anvitivirus protection which sonicwall provides. They use bluecoat service which is far far better than free clam av antivirus and also in terms of IDS-IPS prevention mechanism they are using only open source updates so there would be always a difference between free and commercial things anyhow. They also don't have proper Bandwidth management which we have tested for our voip based servers.

Please do not compare like this.

Every solution has it own strength and weakness.

First decide what feature you want or you need, then check availability in Open source and Commercial.

Still I will also suggest one.

pfsense.

Dear Friends,

I have experience of various firewall / UTM platform including commercial boxes as well as open source. I had used Cyberoam, Sonicwall, Fortigate as commerical & Censornet, pfsense, Endian, ClearOS as open source. For Cyberoam main advantage is its on applince reporting but dont think its super because I had experience that due to database corruption I lost almost 6 months reporting which need for complicne & we all mostly paid to Cyberoam for that else Sonicwall is superb, scalable, fast & rugged UTM (I'm taking about NSA series which I'm using rightnow).

I had also extensive experience of using pfsense, its very good firewall with load balancing & work verywell with low-end hardware like P-III/256RAM. For my 70 users need in past, I used P-III-500/192MB RAM/1GB HDD, it was working awesome with just 25-40% processor utilization. Its live bandwidth graph utility is superb.

But pfsense was 3 yrs back story for me now. Then after I tried Endian & ClearOS Community Editions (formally known as ClarkConnect http://www.clarkconnect.com/), both is very good in its own way. You have to check with features list for what you need. My prefered choice now is ClearOS as its based on CentOS (RedHat based). It serves so many features, you can say its a Firewall/UTM++ appliance & very good for SOHO as well Enterprise need. It can work as Firewall/UTM+Web+Mail+File+Printer server too. They also gives paid support too, it will be very helpful for Enterprise class users those who run with tight budget & need good security.

Please find below URLs for further information.

=> ClearOS : http://www.clearfoundation.com/
=> Endian : http://www.endian.com/

Guys, please share your experience for ClearOS & Endian, once you test & use it.

Thanks,

Hiren Patel
