Motion Capture Demonstration & Workshop
UC Irvine Dance Department
Friday, April 18, 2014
12:30 to 4:00pm

Location:
Experimental Media Performance Lab (xMPL)
Contemporary Arts Center
Claire Trevor School of the Arts
University of California, Irvine

The Dance Department presents two motion capture demonstrations showcasing the capabilities of our Performance Capture Studio, including professional products from motion capture providers such as Faceware Technologies Inc. and Vicon Motion Systems. There will be two sessions:

12:30 to 1:30pm - Motion Capture and Dance
Katie Jo Turk, Dance MFA student and motion capture technician, will discuss motion capture technology and how it can be used creatively within the dance field, and will demonstrate the process of capturing and digitally reconstructing human movement in 3D virtual space. Her presentation will discuss our 28-camera Vicon motion capture system, widely used for video games, feature film animation, dance research, and other applications.

2:00 to 4:00pm - Facial Motion Capture featuring Faceware Technologies
Faceware Technologies Inc. is a leading facial motion capture company based in Los Angeles, CA. Their cutting-edge technology has been used extensively by major clients in the entertainment industry including projects like the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V. Representatives from Faceware will give a brief presentation and demonstrate how their system interacts with live dance research, and Katie Jo demonstrate applications of facial motion capture in live dance performance.

Free of charge.
Everyone is welcome.

The Experimental Media Performance Lab (xMPL) is on the first floor of the Contemporary Arts Center, building #721 on the main UCI campus map at http://communications.uci.edu/documents/pdf/UCI_13_map_campus_core.pdf. Parking is available in the Mesa Parking Structure, shown as MPS on the same map.
