The Draft CY2019 VFX Reference Platform has been published at http://vfxplatform.com.

We had previously indicated a move to Python 3 for CY2019 but unfortunately we've needed to push that back to CY2020. This wasn't an easy decision since by and large the community had collectively agreed to endure the work of upgrading to Python 3, knowing the only way to ensure progress was to set a firm date as a goal. It was also decided no other major changes would happen that year given the amount of effort Python 3 on its own would require.

What hadn't been anticipated two years ago when the CY2019 date was decided is that there would be no supported combination of Qt 5.6, Python 3 and PySide 2. This means Qt needs to be upgraded first and, given the timeframe, upgrading both Qt and Python in the same year is too large a commitment for software vendors and large studios. Based on this, the proposed main change for CY2019 is an upgrade to the forthcoming newest Qt Long Term Support release, which is 5.12, to pave the way for Python 3 the following year in CY2020. We understand some of you may be disappointed, but this was the only practical path forward while still making progress towards the same milestone eventually.

As additional guidance, software vendors are strongly encouraged to provide a Python 3 tech preview release in 2019 to help studios with testing during their Python migration efforts. Python 3 in CY2020 is a firm commitment at this point.

Please send any feedback on this Draft Platform either to feed...@vfxplatform.com or here at vfx-platform-discuss, and as usual we are looking to lock down the Final version around SIGGRAPH time in August.

Logical. This will at least give all the studios more time to migrate legacy code to a python 2/3 compatible state. (start now...)

I look forward to seeing some python 3 tech previews from vendors as early as possible.

Thank you for the draft!
